It is a thrilling space odyssey anchored in hope and an inspiring hero’s journey. However, beneath the heroic fanfare lies a universe full of untold horrors and living nightmares. Comic horrors are defined not by jump scares or monstrous creatures but by their ability to evoke existential dread. The unsettling reality is that humanity is at the bottom of the food chain in a universe containing mind-bending entities, biological blights, and ancient dark-side anomalies that defy the laws of physics. Star Wars has proven to be adept in this domain. Hence, this piece highlights 5 times that Star Wars went full cosmic horror, showing that the franchise is comfortable exploring the more frightening sides of the universe. From flesh-shaping hive minds to eldritch Force deities older than stars, Star Wars has on more than one occasion dipped its toes in the domain of H.P. Lovecraft. The Final Occultation (Official Canon) The Final Occultation, introduced in the 2024 Marvel comic series Darth Maul: Black, White & Red, is a dark cult that operated during the Republic era and claimed its power came from chaotic, incorporeal dark magic. This cult sides with neither the light nor the dark side; its ultimate goal seems to be to shatter reality and plunge the galaxy into madness. During an incident on a prison transport ship carrying detained cult members, the cultists overpower the guard and hijack the ship’s hypermatter to perform a dark ritual that tears open a dimensional rift to madness directly into the void. When the ritual begins, Heldi Cerebron releases a hallucinogen from his exposed brain that causes victims to suffer severe psychological agony. Darth Sidious sent Darth Maul to eliminate the cult, but even he struggled to deal with them. He was nearly overwhelmed, constantly trying not to succumb to the nightmares and terrifying visions of otherworldly monstrosities that really put his Sith training to the test. Maul was cornered into crashing the entire ship on a desolate ice planet, contrary to Sidious’ orders. The Starweirds The Starweirds were originally introduced in Legends via roleplaying sourcebooks, but these horrifying Force-sensitive creatures were officially brought into the modern canon in issues #33 and #34 of Marvel’s Star Wars: Doctor Aphra. The Starweirds are the worst thing a pilot can face while stranded and needing repairs. Serving no apparent purpose, the Starweirds attack pilots repairing their starships and can even prey on ships traveling through hyperspace. They appear as tall, lanky humans with long claws, white hair, and pale skin, and they attack on sight. They emit a telepathic scream that can be heard even in the vacuum of space, and their origins remain a mystery. The mystery of the Starweirds and their attraction to Force-sensitives is what makes them so terrifying. A ship carrying a Jedi or Sith makes the jump to lightspeed. The concentrated brightness of their Force signature is a blazing beacon in the dark, pulling Starweirds directly through the hull of the ship, and force fields are ineffective against them. Star Wars comics confirm that Jedi Knight Ayala Secura and Shaaki Ti captured one during the Clone Wars. These terrifying creatures are a nightmare to fight, as conventional blaster fire passes right through them. Starships are virtually helpless against them; only lightsabers or Force attacks can damage them, making them lethal to normal people. Appearing only in Legends or the expanded universe, the Bedlam Spirits were created by the legendary Alan Moore and John Stokes and are essentially ancient, childlike gods. They exist across various dimensions and can bend matter to their will. However, the threat they pose comes from their blatant indifference toward everything, treating the universe and reality like their playground. The four nigh-omnipotent transdimensional sisters, namely Tilotny, Horliss-Horliss, Cold Danda Sine, and Splendid Ap, spent their days experimenting with biology and reality on the planet Bedlam. They experimented with physical forms, appearing before Princess Leia Organa when she was fleeing the Imperial stormtroopers. Tilotny later arrogantly convinces herself that she invented time, space, and physical shapes and even claims to have personally created the mortals. When her siblings mock her supposed creations, the spirits casually begin altering the flesh and matter of the humans, turning one stormtrooper into solid stone and fusing the other two into a prime display of body horror. In the end, mortals can count themselves lucky that when the four grew bored of their physical avatars, they decided to abandon their experiments. Before moving to a higher plane of existence, Tilotny compels Splendid Ap to clean up this mess, but Splendid Ap accidentally hurls the three stormtroopers eight thousand years into the galaxy’s past in the process. Abeloth (Beloved Queen of the Stars) While not part of the official canon, Abeloth is a being capable of striking fear into the hearts of elite soldiers. Abeloth is a terrifying being who took the combined efforts of several other cosmic beings, such as the Mortis gods, who allied to imprison her within a prison known as the Maw, constructed from a series of black holes. Long before the conflict between the Jedi and the Sith became the status quo, Abeloth was a mortal woman who went by the name ‘Mother’. She would go on to join the ancient, powerful force wielders such as the Father, the Son, and the Daughter in their realm, acting as an anchor for the dysfunctional family. Furthermore, while the Son represented the raw destruction of the dark side and the Daughter represented the pure vitality of the light side, the Mother maintained harmony among them all. However, as decades passed and her mortal body aged while her family remained unchanged and untouched by time, she felt driven to perform a desperate act. Abeloth drank from the dark side’s forbidden Font of Power and bathed in the light side’s sacred Pool of Knowledge, and the result of the chaotic coalition of these forces was her mind torn apart; her physical body transformed into a horrifying eldritch nightmare. This newfound power corrupted her mind, causing her to declare herself Abeloth and conquer the galaxy. The threat she posed drove Father and his children to abandon her and use the ancient architectural superweapon known as Centerpoint Station to drag dozens of black holes together, creating an inescapable cage to end her rampage. Abeloth was not completely contained, because a shift in the cosmic equilibrium between light and dark weakened the prison walls. With the prison weakened, she was able to temporarily slip out of the prison before the Ones would force her back into the abyss. After the Ones perished, Abeloth would escape centuries later during the events of the Fate of the Jedi era. She would target the minds of young, vulnerable Jedi, acting like a psychic virus of sorts. Ultimately, only the conjoined might of the Jedi and Sith, birthed by an unexpected alliance between Luke Skywalker and the Lost Tribe of the Sith, could defeat her. She was targeted simultaneously across both the physical realm and the spiritual plane of Beyond Shadows. However, Luke was cognizant that Abeloth cannot truly be killed, only dormant. Mnggal-Mnggal (Legend canon) This creature appears only in Legends canon, not the modern continuity, but it is an interesting, if horrific, creature that seems to take some notes from Cthulhu. Mnggal-Mnggal is the ultimate manifestation of ancient parasitic rot in Star Wars lore, made up of an endless mass of thick, foul-smelling grey ooze that operates under a single, unified hive consciousness. This entity can also shift into many forms and multiple bodies, and claims to have lived through the golden age of the Celestials and the dawn of the Jedi over 30,000 years ago, existing solely to cause pain and suffering to others. Despite its long life, this creature is extremely sadistic and takes pleasure in terrorizing its victims. The homeworld of this being is the dead world of Mugg Fallow in the Unknown Regions, where Mnggal-Mnggal has flooded the surface, drowning the former oceans in rivers of grey slime and rooting itself deep within the planet’s core. From there, it sends microscopic spurs to infect hosts, and upon contact, they enter through a victim’s nostrils, mouth, or pores. All it takes is 24 hours for the slime to digest the victim’s brain, internal organs, and tissues, swapping them out for a mass of vile liquid that also turns the victims into walking puppets. The creature is not just terrifying because of its form but also because of its intelligence. Its puppets are capable of piloting starships, manipulating technology, and speaking in flat, buzzy, distorted voices using riddles, ancient languages, and psychological manipulation to lure new prey. The Mnggal-Mnggal ultimately stands as a monumental testament to how Star Wars can switch on a dime from a hopeful heroic epic to a horrific space horror.
