It was the weapon Lord Voldemort believed could hand him victory, even after he’d created his seven Horcruxes, and for which he was willing to tear open Dumbledore’s tomb. As one of the Deathly Hallows, the “Deathstick” is canonized as the most powerful wand of all, and its true ownership is why Harry Potter was able to kill Voldemort at the end of The Deathly Hallows. Though it doesn’t exactly have will in conventional terms, the Elder Wand seeks to protect Harry as its true master when Voldemort casts a Killing Curse, which rebounds and kills him. It kills what was essentially invincible. But the Elder Wand is not the only supremely powerful artifact in JK Rowling’s Wizarding World: there are some incredibly powerful items that push it close. The Pensieve in Dumbledore’s office in the hands of a dark wizard could be used as a devastatingly powerful weapon against even the most impressive wizard. The Room of Requirement could technically give any wizard the capacity to improve their power (albeit without the creation of magical items). And together, they form a quite ridiculous armory. 5 The Sword of Gryffindor Anything goblin-forged instantly gets a power boost, and the Sword of Gryffindor is the most infamous of all such items in the Harry Potter world. Forged from goblin-wrought silver, and imbued with goblin magic, the blade’s magical capabilities surpassed even the understanding of the greatest wizards. The Elder Wand is powerful, but it is merely a conduit for conventional magic, and is bound by the standard rules of ownership, destruction, and creation. It also has a static power ceiling, whereas the Sword of Gryffindor only takes in that which makes it stronger. In other words, all magic and materials more powerful than the sword actually make it stronger, which makes it one of the extremely rare objects in the universe capable of destroying a Horcrux. Even the Elder Wand cannot do that. 4 The Veil Unlike every other artifact listed here, the Veil at the heart of the Death Chamber within the belly of the Department of Mysteries does not operate according to conventional magical expectations. More like the somewhat sentient Room of Requirement, the Veil transcends human magic entirely. It is also almost unique in the fact that it has no origin and JK Rowling has never offered any explanation of what it is, how it works, and any limitations, beyond it being a breakable barrier between the lands of the living and the dead. The Elder Wand can cast a Killing Curse against any target, but it requires a wizard to wield it, but the Veil requires no intent, nor master, nor spell: it simply, irresistibly is. When Sirius Black falls through the Veil after Bellatrix Lestrange hits him off-guard with a curse, his fate is instantly and irreversibly sealed. In effect, the Veil is a weapon of unimaginable devastating potential, and in the wrong hands, it could be horrific what could be achieved with it. Quite what the Death Eaters did with it when they took control of the Ministry doesn’t bear thinking about. 3 The Time Turner As Thanos proved in Avengers: Infinity War, mastery of time is an almost impossibly vast power. It allows mastery over death, because no fate cannot be undone, and basically every outcome, from developing dangerous spells to duelling is in the control of whoever has the ability to time travel. It was a controversial addition to the Wizarding World, and became more so when it was at the heart of The Cursed Child’s plot, but the Time-Turner made for excellent spectacle at the end of The Prisoner of Azkaban. Hermione being given access to the Time-Turner was always both idiotic and testament to just how powerful Dumbledore believed her to be, and she barely used it to its potential for most of her ownership. Only when she travels back in time, with Harry in tow, does Hermione show anything close to the full power of the Time-Turner. Two lives are saved - hence the mastery of death - and at a fundamental level, Hermione is able to ignore the laws of nature. No other spell or artifact is shown to be capable of that, and it would theoretically allow any holder even to undo even the results of the Elder Wand (provided they weren’t killed before being able to use it themselves). Nothing comes close to that strategic value. 2 The Philosopher's Stone The Elder Wand is famous for granting near-invincibility in a duel, and Voldemort seeks it as a means to master death, but its telling that the first artifact he seeks is actually The Philosopher’s Stone. The Wand cannot preserve life, despite that being Voldemort’s actual mission, because it courts death by its very nature. The Stone, on the other hand, achieves true mastery over mortality when it is created by Nicolas Flamel. The key to creating the Elixir of Life, the Stone grants perpetual youth and longevity that essentially means immortality. And it comes with another secondary power that also grants its owner vast power in a more straightforward, capitalist manner - the ability to turn any base metal into pure gold. There are limitations, of course, because the Elixir cannot protect against violent magic or traumatic death, but the Philosopher’s Stone any fear of death, and manages an almost unique feat that only the Cloak of Invisibility achieved before it: defiance of Death. 1 The Invisibility Cloak We only really know the true legend of the Elder Wand because of The Tale of the Three Brothers, which is initially presented as a children’s fable, but which is at least a version of real wizarding history. In the same Tale, we learn that Harry’s invisibility cloak - or the Cloak of Invisibility to give it its true name - is also one of the Deathly Hallows. Perhaps because it is far less flashy than the Elder Wand, Voldemort seems to simply overlook the invisibility cloak. But the Elder Wand has a fatal flaw, because it courts betrayal and bloodshed - a sort of Monkey’s Paw gift from Death - in a quest to find a more powerful master. Likewise the Resurrection Stone is a nightmare that drives the second brother mad, and offers no true mastery of death. But the Cloak defeated Death, the only Hallow to do so. In that achievement alone - which is obviously teamed with the intellect and guile of the third brother (and Harry) - the Cloak can claim to be more powerful than the Wand. Functionally, it’s also immune to hexes, curses, and summoning charms, and is essentially the most powerful defensive item in the entire universe.
