5 Airlines Offering Complimentary Premium Economy WiFi

As technologies like satellite connectivity become more widely available to airlines, passengers have, in turn, felt the benefit more and more. The caveat is having to fork out extra for the privilege in many cases. But some carriers bundle complimentary WiFi into their fares, particularly for passengers who are already paying more for an upgraded experience. While not overly common, that can mean the added bonus of staying online at 30,000 feet-plus (9,144 meters-plus) at no additional cost. Here, we explore a handful of airlines where WiFi has become part and parcel with premium-class travel. Cathay Pacific WiFi standard for premium economy flyers with Cathay membership Credit: Cathay Pacific Cathay Pacific is among the clearest examples of where complimentary WiFi is a standard feature for customers flying premium economy and above. The Hong Kong-based operator now includes the service in the cost of these fares, leaving passengers little to do to get online mid-flight. According to the carrier, high-speed inflight connectivity is offered onboard every aircraft in its fleet. Passengers can typically connect once their aircraft has climbed above 10,000 feet (3,048 meters). Beyond 35,000 feet (10,668 meters), satellite connectivity is possible in most areas of the world, excluding vast swathes of far northern and polar regions which lack coverage, and provided poor weather conditions do not cause disruptions. As to which apps passengers can use when online, Cathay Pacific notes online that messaging services are available, short-form streaming services can be accessed with a paid pass, while internet-enabled calls cannot be made. The caveat is that a Cathay Pacific membership number must be attached to each ticket, either at the point of booking or at check-in. In other words, premium-class passengers must sign up as Cathay members to connect to the inflight internet. That is free to do, though, with the process of connecting to the internet for those eligible as simple as selecting the Cathay Pacific WiFi option on a given device and going through the operator’s online portal during the journey. Singapore Airlines Available for members of the free-to-join KrisFlyer scheme Fellow Asian operator Singapore Airlines is another to offer WiFi free of charge to a number of its customers. Unlike Cathay Pacific, however, Singapore extends complimentary access to passengers in any class, including those holding economy tickets on various routes. Business class and first class fares include unlimited onboard internet as standard. Economy and premium economy passengers can also get free WiFi through membership in Singapore Airlines’ loyalty schemes. These include PPS Club — Singapore Airlines’ exclusive program for frequent premium-class passengers — as well as KrisFlyer, which is free to join. Again, this is offered to customers once their aircraft have surpassed 10,000 feet (3,048 meters), or approximately 15 minutes into each flight, as Singapore Airlines notes on its website. Per the airline, internet calling and the use of streaming apps are not supported by its inflight WiFi. Emirates Free WiFi for messaging available to Skywards members Credit: Emirates Emirates is another that gives members of its loyalty scheme access to WiFi for free during their journeys. In the United Arab Emirates co-flag carrier’s case, this means signing up for its Skywards rewards program. However, how you can use onboard internet service varies by cabin class and loyalty status. Emirates says WiFi is available to all Skywards members, and the scheme costs nothing to join. Those traveling in economy or premium economy will tend to be confined to a messaging-only internet package, though, unless they have achieved platinum status through Skywards. While this offering largely mirrors rivals' complimentary internet, Emirates explicitly advertises a better service for those in higher classes or with platinum status. “Free WiFi internet for the whole flight” is available in any such case, Emirates notes online, as opposed to “free unlimited chat” for blue, silver, or gold members flying economy or premium economy. Paid WiFi upgrades are offered, and start at $9.99. As of early July, 33 of its 777s and three A380s had been retrofitted with satellite-enabled Starlink WiFi. One million connections to the system had been made via its aircraft, Emirates said at the time, with this having strengthened connectivity for streaming, internet calling, social media browsing, and gaming. All told, Emirates is set to bring Starlink to 232 of its aircraft as part of a wider $5 billion refurbishment effort. Qatar Airways Another airline where passengers can get the benefit of free Starlink WiFi Qatar Airways, like Emirates, is also in the process of rolling out Starlink across its portfolio of aircraft. Namely, that primarily includes its widebodies, on which the Qatari operator advertises uninterrupted, gate-to-gate connectivity. That means WiFi capabilities depend on specific aircraft and airports, as it stands. Where Starlink is available onboard Qatar Airways jets, anyone can use the service for free. Access is granted across the board for 45 minutes per person, regardless of membership status or cabin class. To use Starlink-enabled internet for the duration of journeys, customers must be a part of Qatar Airways’ Privilege Club. As with other carriers, joining the loyalty scheme is free and lets travelers collect Avios to redeem later, as well as points to move up membership tiers and access stronger benefits. At Qatar Airways, free uninterrupted WiFi with speeds of up to 500 megabits per second — where available — is among these perks. This included all of the airline’s Airbus A350, Boeing 777-200LR, and Boeing 787-8 planes. The rollout was ongoing across its Boeing 777-300ER and Boeing 787-9 fleets in the meantime. WiFi was also available for purchase on other models, per the airline, where other WiFi technologies had been installed previously. Virgin Atlantic Starlink rollout well underway on existing fleet Starlink is increasingly emerging on flights operated by Virgin Atlantic too. Where it is unavailable, Virgin Atlantic’s existing WiFi service covers many flights, per the British carrier’s website. Speeds and capabilities vary by route, and pricing also depends on the aircraft. Through its Starlink rollout, Virgin Atlantic is progressively offering customers free internet. As is common among its rivals mentioned above, this is at least the case if one has signed up for Virgin Atlantic’s Flying Club prior to departure. If so, complimentary connectivity is available onboard for everything from messaging to streaming across much of the globe. Plans are to install the technology across its wider aircraft portfolio at some point in 2027. Its other models already offer internet access, but WiFi packages cost extra depending on duration and which apps travelers wantto use.
