Not too long ago, a 4K gaming setup was unviable without a high-end graphics card and gaming monitor. The hit to performance after switching from 1440p to 4K was too much to digest, and upscaling lower resolutions to 4K didn't yield a pleasant experience. This firmly kept 1440p as the target resolution for those building a new gaming PC in the last few years. However, many gamers failed to realize that the definition of "4K gaming" has changed in the last few years. Native 4K gave way to excellent upscaled 4K, frame generation made it easier to saturate high-refresh-rate displays, and 4K displays themselves became highly affordable. The previous understanding of 4K gaming no longer applies, and we should stop pretending that this holy grail of gaming is elusive in 2026. Anything else wasn't crisp or responsive enough to qualify. Upscaling has always been an option since the launch of DLSS, but the early AI models were prone to motion artifacts that made the stretch from lower resolutions to 4K feel significantly worse than the real thing. DLSS 2.0 and FSR 2.0 brought visual and performance improvements, but high framerates at 4K remained out of reach in the heaviest titles. Only in the last three years have upscaling techniques completely redefined what upscaled 4K gaming looks like. With Nvidia's recent transformer model under DLSS 4.5, visual artifacts during motion have almost completely disappeared. AMD's FSR 4 suite has also made huge strides, catching up to Nvidia in motion clarity. It's time to stop chasing native 4K 60 FPS or 100 FPS as the acceptable baseline. Quality and even performance upscaling modes are now virtually indistinguishable from native 4K. You're wasting your GPU's performance by sticking to native resolution instead of giving upscaling a genuine chance. Most of the latest AAA games can easily achieve a smooth experience with modern upscaling and frame generation. Earlier, this was the domain of high-end graphics cards costing over $1,000. On the Nvidia side, the RTX 5070 Ti at $750 joined the ranks of 4K-capable GPUs, but it rarely sold at that price, and even now, it retails for around $900. It wasn't until AMD's RX 9070 XT, which launched at $600, that 4K gaming became relatively affordable. While it's true that AMD's latest flagship is priced around $700 these days, it has created a new floor for 4K graphics cards. You can expect 80–90 FPS at 4K in ray-traced titles like Resident Evil Requiem with FSR Balanced. It's high time gamers stopped overvaluing high-end GPUs and genuinely consider mid-range cards for long-lasting 4K gaming. AMD's RX 90 series can't do ray tracing as well as Nvidia's RTX 50 series, but beyond that, it's objectively the better buy. You're getting more VRAM for your money, better FPS per dollar, and competitive ML-based upscaling and frame generation. You don't even need expensive CPUs to avoid a bottleneck. A Ryzen 5 7600X or Ryzen 7 5800X3D pairs nicely with the newer mid-range cards for 4K gaming. PowerColor Reaper AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT 4K gaming monitors are more affordable than ever You don't need to wait anymore Without a great 4K display, all the GPU horsepower and upscaling wizardry would amount to nothing. A decent 4K gaming monitor from an established brand used to cost at least $500–$600 a few years ago. Buying a 4K monitor was one of the biggest roadblocks to enjoying 4K gaming. Today, however, you can grab a 4K 165Hz IPS monitor, and even a dual-mode display, capable of 1080p 320Hz, for under $300 from brands like Asus and Acer. OLED and 4K are still not achievable without spending $700–$800, but we might not be far from affordable 4K OLEDs. As 1440p 240Hz OLED monitors have fallen to $350, 4K OLED displays will also become affordable soon. If you've been on the fence about jumping to 4K gaming, cheaper 4K IPS monitors have removed at least one of the roadblocks for you. You can still build a 4K gaming setup with an RX 9070 XT, Ryzen 5 7600X, and a 4K IPS gaming monitor for under $2,000. The AI crisis is set to inflate GPU, RAM, and SSD prices even more, so you'll need to act fast.
