And when he's not writing, he's working on beating his record of 1,200 comics read in a year. Every great Marvel hero has a moment where they go from ordinary to extraordinary. Sometimes it’s a subtle thing that happens over an extended period that leads to an epic act of bravery. It can also be something as short as a speech that motivates the team to defeat overwhelming odds. Regardless of how it happens, if it’s done right, it can catapult a character into becoming one of the best of the best. The X-Men's Wolverine may be a popular character who's on multiple teams now, but he wasn’t always an icon. Sure, he looked cool in his first appearance because he survived a fight with the Hulk (The Incredible Hulk No. 180/181). However, even after becoming an X-Man, he still wasn’t interesting. Logan fought alongside his team and made smart remarks, but he still didn’t have that “it” moment. Luckily, writer Chris Claremont changed that during Uncanny X-Men No. 133, back in 1980. How A Fight With The Hellfire Club Changed Wolverine's Life Uncanny X-Men Nos. 132-134; Writers Chris Claremont and John Byrne; Penciler: John Byrne; Inker: Terry Austin When the X-Men attempted to infiltrate the Hellfire Club ranks via a bash, they knew they were coming. This led to the villains easily dispatching Marvel’s Mightiest Mutants. Among the dispatchers was the Black Bishop of the Hellfire Club, Harold Leland, who uses his mutant mass-increasing powers to slam Logan into the sewer. Leland figured his enemy would drown while the rest of the X-Men remained their prisoners. Too bad you don’t kill the Wolverine that easily. On the last page of Uncanny X-Men No. 132, Logan rises from the sewer water and says, “Okay, suckers–you’ve taken your best shot! Now it’s my turn!” It was an image that became one of the most recognizable in comic book history and led to Wolverine’s coming-out party. To be certain that their foe was dead, the leaders of the Hellfire Club sent their knights to search for Wolverine. Unfortunately, they got their wish. Logan was not forgiving. The Hellfire Club beat and captured his friends. For all he knew, they could have been dying, and he was the only thing stopping that from happening. So, each of the knights who attempted to fight him met a bloody and deadly fate. When Logan arrived, a mind-controlled Jean Grey attempted to take him out. During the tussle, she broke Mastermind’s control long enough to free Cyclops. Once his teammates were freed, Wolverine could get his rematch with Leland. This time, the Hellfire’s Black Bishop was the one crashing through the floor. Why Was This Important To Logan’s Lore? While Wolverine's fighting prowess may not have been as well-known as it is today, he was always among the best in comics. What made these issues of Uncanny X-Men special was seeing Logan do this on his own. Normally, he’s with his teammates when he helps save the day. This time, it was all Wolverine and his claws, and without Cyclops, Professor Xavier, or Storm to tell him to hold back. Another noteworthy part of this adventure was witnessing Wolverine do more than just swing his claws wildly. Each move was strategic because Logan knew he couldn’t be reckless. One mistake and the evil mutants could murder the X-Men. So he moved cautiously through the Hellfire Club, making sure each step was deliberate. Marvel Comics has more than enough fighters, but not all of them become top-tier characters. There has to be a purpose behind the fists and a story worth telling. That's what these issues of Uncanny X-Men provided. Without it, there's no way Wolverine becomes the popular, money-making machine he is today.
