You witness the terrifying ordeals through the eyes of the characters along with the concerned looks on their faces. The Blair Witch Project is one of the most effective uses of found footage. Cloverfield channels the spirit of The Blair Witch Project but injects a new enemy into the story: an out-of-this-world monster. The action heads to New York City, where the couple, Rob (Michael Stahl-David) and Beth (Odette Yustman), find themselves in the midst of a monster attack. When the head of the Statue of Liberty lands in the street, Cloverfield becomes an invasion thriller and a fight for humanity's survival. A proper spoof that has endured over time Airplane! is certainly not the first spoof film to exist. However, it came at a time when the genre started to explode thanks to the movies of Mel Brooks and the trio behind Airplane!—David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker. Airplane! spoofs 1957's Zero Hour! and the rest of the disaster movie genre. The main storyline in Airplane! revolves around former pilot Ted Striker (Robert Hays) who tries to win back his ex-girlfriend (Elaine Dickinson) while on a flight. When the pilots and crew suffer from food poisoning, Ted must overcome his fear of flying and land the plane safely. The plot of Airplane! doesn't matter all too much. It's all about the gags and one-liners, which seemingly happen every minute of the 87-minute movie. The MVP is clearly Leslie Nielsen, whose sensational deadpan created the template for his run in The Naked Gun franchise. Airplane! has a runtime of 87 minutes. 2 Paranormal Activity Is there a spirit inside the house? Hand up—Paranormal Activity remains one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. I've never been someone who is kept up at night by slashers. Instead, I lose sleep over the supernatural elements because they blur the lines of what's real and what's fake. After watching Paranormal Activity, I thought every sound from the radiator or creak from another room was a ghost. The found footage movie follows Katie (Katie Featherston) and Micah (Micah Sloat), a couple who embark on a paranormal investigation to see if a ghost or demonic spirit has been haunting Katie. Micah first sets up a camera to record the couple while they sleep. The footage captures the lights flickering and doors slamming, but the couple think nothing of it. The strange occurrences ramp up in intensity, to the point where you might find yourself letting out a scream after every jump scare. If you've never seen it, prepare for a frightening and entertaining experience. Paranormal Activity has a runtime of 85 minutes. 1 A Quiet Place Don't make a sound It's still baffling to think that John Krasinski, an actor best known for playing Jim in The Office, directed one of the most successful horror movies of the past 10 years. Yet that's what happened with 2018's A Quiet Place. I remember the trailer that aired during Super Bowl LII as a rare "Wait, what is this?" moment for me. In this post-apocalyptic world, an extraterrestrial species has wiped out much of the human population. These blind creatures have enhanced hearing abilities, meaning even the slightest noise will cause them to hunt and kill the source of that sound. In upstate New York, Lee (John Krasinski) lives with his wife, Evelyn (Emily Blunt), deaf daughter Regan (Millicent Simmonds), and sons Marcus (Noah Jupe) and Beau (Cade Woodward). The family has developed clever techniques to avoid making noise, such as using sign language and walking on sand. However, an unexpected development sends a pregnant Evelyn into labor, forcing the family to take extreme measures. Once the situation becomes a fight for the family's survival, A Quiet Place is a roller coaster of action and thrills. However, you'll be surprised at how much heart A Quiet Place has when it comes to its depiction of parenthood. A Quiet Place has a runtime of 90 minutes.
