37 Years Later, H.P. Lovecraft’s “Devious” Cult Classic Sequel Is Getting A Mammoth New Release

Lovecraft's "Herbert West–Reanimator," Bride of Re-Animator originally came out in 1990 as the second installment in the trilogy. The sequel debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival and earned mixed reviews, with a critic score of 57% on Rotten Tomatoes (compared to Re-Animator's 88%), but Bride of Re-Animator has since become a cult classic. Now, almost four decades later, Bride of Re-Animator has been re-released in a massive 4K UHD collection from Ignite Films that includes several hours of special features and has been approved by director Brian Yuzna himself. There are four different editions that fans can choose from, including the three-disc Ultimate Limited Edition box set, priced at $129.95, that comes with a finger creature collectible in the 4K UHD and Blu-ray combo pack. Special features include a brand-new 60-minute documentary called Till Death Do Us Part: Making Bride of Re-Animator; extended interviews with Yuzna, Bruce Abbott, Fabiana Udenio, Jeffrey Combs and Kathleen Kinmont; a new commentary with SNL's Sarah Sherman/Sarah Squirm; and a new 4K release trailer. Legacy bonus features include audio commentaries with Yuzna, Combs, Abbott, Thomas Rainone, John Buechler, Mike Deak, Robert Kurtzman, Howard Berger and Screaming Mad George; featurettes Brian Yuzna Remembers Bride of Re-Animator, Splatter Masters: The Special Effects Artists of Bride of Re-Animator, Getting Ahead of Horror and Carnival Sequence; and deleted scenes. The new box set also has five collector art cards and a hardcover book with an introduction by Yuzna; interviews from cast members Combs, Abbott, Kinmont and Udenio; and essays from Genevieve Radosti, Willow Maclay, Esther Rosenfield, Tori Potenza and Alice Maio Mackay. The Deluxe Edition box set, which costs $79.95, includes the same 4K UHD and Blu-ray combo pack with bonus features, book and collector cards but does not come with the finger creature collectible. The 4K UHD standard edition ($49.95), meanwhile, consists of two discs (one for the 4K UHD and the second for the Blu-ray) with the film and bonus features, and the Blu-ray standard edition ($39.95) has two Blu-ray discs with the movie and bonus features. In Bride of Re-Animator, which took its title from Bride of Frankenstein, Combs stars as Dr. Herbert West and Abbott as Dr. Dan Cain, and the story follows their characters as they use various body parts from corpses to create a new woman to be Cain's bride following the death of his fiancée. Yuzna returned to the franchise 13 years later for another Re-Animator sequel called Beyond Re-Animator. The filmmaker wanted to make additional films in the series, but nothing ever materialized. Instead of new sequels or reboots, fans can now revisit the original trilogy with the re-release of Bride of Re-Animator and experience the film in a whole new way.
