Tellus Power has announced an expansion of its US headquarters and manufacturing operations through a new 30,000-square-foot facility in Irvine, California, as it prepares for commercial-scale deployment of next-generation energy infrastructure. Announced on August 4, the expansion will centralize the company’s engineering, manufacturing and commercial functions. Tellus Power said the move is intended to increase domestic production of bidirectional energy systems serving electric vehicles (EVs), battery storage, microgrids and vehicle-to-grid applications across North America and international markets. The company plans to achieve this by combining testing, assembly, quality control, warehousing, production, customer support, certification work and equipment interoperability capabilities at one site. A centralized manufacturing operation The Irvine facility is designed to move more of Tellus Power’s product development and manufacturing workflow into a unified operating environment. Bringing technical and commercial teams together could help the company coordinate product testing, production, and customer deployment as demand increases. Tellus Power said the site has recently secured IFI (UL) certification. It is also intended to support the production and shipment of products compliant with the Build America, Buy America Act, making the equipment suitable for federally funded infrastructure projects as well as commercial energy deployments. “This expansion represents much more than additional space,” said Mike Calise, Chief Executive Officer of Tellus Power. “It’s an investment in improved test capability, lean manufacturing methodology and quality control required to significantly scale our previously established Build America, Buy America (BABA) facility,” he continued. “Our new Irvine, CA facility continues to draw from the excellent Southern California tech talent pool in the center of gravity for EV, V2X, and micro-grid deployments,” Calise added. “Tellus Power’s new facility also adds an impressive technician training center and expanded executive and employee offices, enabling more customer collaboration to meet the ever-growing demand for domestically manufactured intelligent energy systems,” he said. Bidirectional systems connect EVs and grids Tellus Power develops systems that enable electrical energy to flow in both directions between connected assets. Its technology brings together passenger and fleet vehicle charging, battery storage and vehicle-to-grid functionality within grid-edge infrastructure. Unlike conventional charging equipment that primarily delivers power to a vehicle, bidirectional systems can allow compatible vehicle batteries to return electricity to buildings or the grid. This capability could help operators manage distributed energy resources and use parked EVs as flexible storage assets. Supporting wider commercial deployment The expanded headquarters will act as an operating hub for customer projects involving next-generation energy infrastructure. Tellus Power expects the site to support deployments across North America and other global markets as it commercializes its energy-transfer technology. The company has positioned this infrastructure as a link between electrification, robotics, autonomous systems and distributed power resources. Its systems are designed to control high-flow electricity at the grid edge, where vehicles, batteries and local energy networks interact. By expanding its domestic manufacturing footprint, Tellus Power is preparing to supply larger infrastructure programs while retaining testing, certification and support capabilities close to production.
