30 Iraqi students join PetroChina Scholarship at China University of Petroleum

China University of Petroleum Qingdao/ Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) — Thirty Iraqi university students are completing their preparatory semester at the China University of Petroleum (East China) in the coastal city of Qingdao, marking the inaugural cohort of the Pioneers of Excellence academic scholarship program. The initiative represents the first time the Iraqi federal government has mobilized the state Training, Technology Transfer, and Scholarship Fund (TTSF) to sponsor undergraduate engineering scholars in China. Funded under the corporate social responsibility and capacity-building commitments of PetroChina Iraq – West Qurna 1, the program bridges bilateral energy development with engineering education. The scholarship follows a customized “0.5 + 4” academic curriculum designed specifically by China University of Petroleum (East China): Preparatory Foundation (6 Months): Intensive Mandarin Chinese language acquisition paired with foundation courses in advanced calculus, physics, and chemistry. Undergraduate Degree (4 Years): Full Bachelor of Science degree tracks focusing on three core upstream disciplines: Petroleum Engineering: Reservoir management, well completion, and enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Mechanical Engineering: Industrial machinery design, refinery turbines, and pipeline hydraulics. Petroleum Geology: Geophysical seismic surveying, structural sedimentology, and basin modeling. Selected through nationwide competitive examinations and panel interviews organized jointly by the Ministry of Oil and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the students represent diverse Iraqi governorates. Bilateral Diplomatic Patronage: During the program’s official inauguration ceremony in April, the Consul General of China in Basra, Chen Peizhong, and the Scientific and Educational Counselor at the Iraqi Embassy in Beijing, Dr. Mohanad Najah Jawad Al-Shorofi, addressed the cohort, highlighting the importance of developing native technical talent to lead Iraq’s domestic energy sector. Student Commitment: Class representative Mohammed Al-Tawous reaffirmed the students’ commitment to mastering advanced engineering curricula to support the modernization of Iraq’s oil and gas infrastructure upon graduation. Industrial Synergy: Since assuming the role of lead contractor at the giant West Qurna 1 oil field in 2024, PetroChina has prioritized local workforce upskilling, transitioning bilateral energy ties from traditional equipment procurement to joint human capital development. Hydrocarbons form the foundation of Iraq’s national economy. By equipping domestic engineering talent with advanced training at premier international energy institutions, the Ministry of Oil aims to build a modern technical workforce capable of operating complex extraction assets, deploying artificial lift technologies, and managing next-generation energy infrastructure across southern oil fields.
