30-Episode Spy Thriller On Netflix Deserves Kudos For Knowing When To End

In the decades since, spy thrillers have taken on countless forms. There are the Prestige TV dramas like The Americans and Slow Horses, simmering slow-burn character studies that apply the patient storytelling and complex morality of The Sopranos or The Wire to espionage. There are also the R-rated action-packed crowd-pleasers like Reacher and its spinoff Neagley, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, or The Terminal List, which often get dark and violent, but are more concerned with high-octane thrills than quiet, intimate character drama. The latter camp is also home to Netflix’s The Night Agent, an escapist thriller based on the 2019 novel of the same name by author Matthew Quick. Following Gabriel Basso’s eponymous FBI agent Peter Sutherland as he unravels a complicated conspiracy that involves his own employers as well as many members of clandestine three-letter agencies, The Night Agent is frequently listed alongside Reacher as a classic of so-called “Dad TV.” While its fun premise might feel like it could last forever, the show is right to wrap up with its upcoming fourth and final season. On the practical side of things, season 3 of The Night Agent spent less time on Netflix’s most-watched list than its two predecessors, so the likelihood of the show’s impending cancellation was increasing. That said, on a more existential level, the unexpected nature of many streaming show cancellations means shows should always begin with a pre-planned end in mind. If critical successes like Netflix’s three-season masterpiece Dark prove anything, it is that a pre-planned finale can make an already-strong series into a true cult classic. The fact that The Night Agent now has a predetermined ending with enough screen time to wrap up loose ends is superb news for the series. The Night Agent’s Spy Thriller Story Continues An Impressive Streaming Trend What makes the success of The Night Agent all the more impressive, and makes its decision to end with season 4 even wiser, is the fact that the show outgrew its source material years ago. Like Prime Video’s ambitious alternate history series The Man in the High Castle, which was based on the novel of the same name by author Philip K. Dick, The Night Agent adapted its source book in season 1 and everything after its season 1 finale was original storytelling. This has become increasingly common in the world of streaming shows, with Hulu’s Margaret Atwood adaptation The Handmaid’s Tale also finishing its direct novel adaptation with its season 1 finale and telling an original story after that point. The Night Agent’s sustained success and the wise decision to end the Netflix show before it outstays its welcome proves that this trend is a positive development for streaming services.
