That said, it's often overlooked that, while Barbie is of course a major name with substantial worldwide acclaim, the movie itself didn't build on the back of any other film before it, being its own standalone entity altogether. This makes Barbie's box office results even more fascinating, since it means the film was also a major demonstration of what's possible for a movie story that doesn't have any other films or shows directly setting it up, and reflects just how much Barbie resonated with audiences worldwide in order for its box office earnings to break a major milestone that looks more and more striking again as the years continue. Barbie Was The First Solo Movie To Be A Year's Box Office Number One In 10 Years Barbie's $1.4 billion worldwide box office results were the subject of no small amount of attention when the movie debuted back in 2023, with the film quickly topping the year's box office charts, narrowly outpacing The Super Mario Bros. Movie and its own $1.3 billion earnings. That said, this was made doubly impressive by the film's status as a debut that wasn't a sequel of some variety or another. Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of films that become any year's top box office hit tend to be sequels for to already popular series, as was evidenced for the decade before Barbie's own results, with 2013's Frozen being the last film to hold this title before Barbie itself. This is largely through franchises like the MCU and Star Wars, with Spider-Man: No Way Home being the biggest movie of 2021, 2019 and 2018 having Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War top their respective years, 2017 having Star Wars: The Last Jedi as its biggest box office hit, 2016 seeing Captain America: Civil War top the charts, and 2015 seeing another Star Wars box office success story in the form of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Other major franchises have followed suit in much the same way, as it's no surprise that Avatar: Way of the Water was 2022's biggest box office hit, nor is it a plot twist that Transformers: Age of Extinction topped the charts in 2014, given the overall financial success across the board that these two film series have enjoyed throughout their histories as well. Indeed, even 2020's biggest box office hit, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train, is ultimately a sequel, as it follows directly on from the story of Demon Slayer season 1 to provide a feature-length adaptation of the Mugen Train arc, meaning we had a full decade of sequel box office dominance until Barbie hit the big screen in 2023. Barbie's Record Hasn't Been Broken Again Since It Released In 2023 As it stands, Barbie is currently the last time in film history we had a solo movie hit the number one place in a year's box office results, as 2024, 2025, and currently 2026 all have seen sequels take this title. While there's still time left in 2026, it does notably seem as though the top spot on this box office lineup will either go to 2026's current top box office hit - the fourth MCU Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day - or otherwise to the MCU's fifth Avengers movie, Avengers: Doomsday, ultimately meaning a sequel would hold the title for 2026 either way. Similarly, 2025 saw Ne Zha 2 top its box office list worldwide, and 2024 would go on to see Inside Out 2 become its most fiscally successful film, meaning the jury is still out on when a solo movie like Barbie will sit at the top of a year's box office results again - though, as it stands, Barbie's own results only become more impressive for every year that passes without its specific kind of success being replicated by another non-sequel film.
