One of the greatest captains in Starfleet history, Jean-Luc Picard led the crew of the starship Enterprise on a journey that took the Star Trek franchise to a whole other level. Played by Patrick Stewart, Jean-Luc Picard is a bona fide pop culture hero. Prior to being cast as Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart had starred in David Lynch's Dune, among other movies. In 2019, Patrick Stewart returned to the role that made him famous in the three-season Star Trek: Picard. Set roughly 20 years after Nemesis, it opens with Jean-Luc having been gone from Starfleet for some time. Fans learned he resigned in disgust, and retreated to his family’s vineyard to be haunted by his memories. An encounter with a mysterious young woman brought Picard back to form, setting him on a path that would return him to Starfleet, if only on a part-time, honorary basis. Star Trek: Picard wrapped up on a high note in 2023. The Enterprise’s crew saved the Federation from the Borg one last time, and Picard and company rode off into the sunset. Now, three years after Picard’s emotional finale, Jean-Luc’s life has taken a turn for the worse, right as the Federation is facing one of its biggest threats. A Dark Fate Has Befallen Captain Picard in Star Trek's Epic New Series Captain Picard Saw Something So Evil and Powerful It Rendered Him Comatose In the story “Manifest Destiny,” written by Christopher Cantwell and drawn by Isaac Sanchez and appearing in IDW Publishing’s Star Trek 60th Anniversary Special, Starfleet is just beginning to explore the Epsilon Corridor. This region of space, uncharted until now, shows a great deal of promise: its worlds are rich in resources and even the fabric of space-time acts differently. However, events take a dark turn when strange things begin happening to the crew studying the Corridor. One in particular, a Betazoid, has grown distressed and threatens to blow himself out of an airlock. His commanding officer and security personnel are at a loss to explain his actions. Fans learn he was present with Picard when the Admiral was inspecting the Corridor’s technology, and something happened to him. Picard’s mind snapped, and he slipped into a coma. The best doctors in Starfleet are then unable to help him. “Manifest Destiny” serves as a prequel to IDW’s upcoming relaunch of Star Trek. Cantwell, who wrote “Manifest Destiny,” will also write Star Trek. The story introduces the book’s premise, namely the exploration of the Epsilon Corridor. Something though is rotten in the Corridor. Whatever it is, it is ancient beyond belief, and apparently hostile as well. Fans are given a cryptic glimpse into what Picard saw, and it was terrifying. “Manifest Destiny” ends with the hapless Betazoid, who felt only a fraction of what Picard did, blowing himself out of an airlock. What Was Scary Enough to Overload Picard's Mind? Jean-Luc Picard’s new fate is shocking, and one that is sure to not only drive the new Star Trek comic, but also get fans talking. Whatever Picard saw when he reached out to the Epsilon technology caused his mind to shut down. In his 100 years of life, Picard has dealt with a great deal of mental trauma, be it his assimilation by the Borg or his torture by the Cardassians, a fact the story acknowledges. None of these incidents sent him into a deep coma, underscoring the threat the Corridor poses. Picard ended on a high note for Jean-Luc, but now his happily ever after has come crashing down, right as the Federation might be facing an ancient evil.
