It's November, which means Netflix U.S. has an entire slate of new movies arriving on the service. Some of the notable licensed content includes Whiplash, Air Force One, Fury, and Bridesmaids. As for genre-focused content, there are a few nail-biting thrillers that should be saved to your My List. The first thriller is a Netflix original featuring two A-list stars in an intriguing black comedy. The next movie is an engaging political thriller with a loaded cast that includes Ryan Gosling. Finally, my top selection might be the greatest film of all time. I'm being hyperbolic, but it's a landmark event that marked an important moment in movie history. 3 Sacrifice Satirical look at the world The "eat the rich" satire has been a popular cinematic trope, especially in the modern age. Two thrillers from last week's article, The Menu and Ready or Not, are recent examples of eat-the-rich movies. Triangle of Sadness, The White Lotus, Beef, and the Knives Out franchise also come to mind when thinking about scripts that skewered society's ruling class. The latest addition to the genre is Romain Gavras' Sacrifice. Interestingly, Sacrifice's two stars, Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy, have experience with this genre, with the former starring in Knives Out and the latter headlining The Menu. In Sacrifice, actor Mike Tyler (Evans) desperately needs to restore his image to save his career. While attending an environmental gala on a Greek island, Mike and two other people, including billionaire Ben Bracken (Vincent Cassel), are abducted by Joan (Taylor-Joy), who leads a group of radical cult members. Joan believes she must sacrifice the abducted trio to prevent a global catastrophe. Sacrifice certainly pokes fun at celebrities, and I give Evans credit for taking on the role of a dim-witted actor. Gavras dials the performative nature of celebrity culture up to 10 in the first half of the movie. Although Sacrifice starts to lose steam toward the end, it never wavers from its absurd nature, which I respect. 2 The Ides of March Welcome to the election In the United States, the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November is known as Election Day. This year, Americans will head to their polling places to take part in the midterm elections. U.S. elections can be heated, especially behind the scenes, as the two opposing sides do whatever it takes to win. Although The Ides of March is fictional, it's a compelling thriller that nails the importance of political strategy and behind-the-scenes drama. Junior campaign manager Stephen Meyers (Ryan Gosling) is working for Pennsylvania Governor Mike Morris (George Clooney), a Democratic candidate working to secure the nomination for president. Stephen begins this journey as someone with a positive outlook on the world, as he believes he can make a difference by doing the right thing. The further he gets into Morris' campaign, the more jaded Stephen becomes, as he experiences the dirty nature of backroom politics and unethical maneuvers firsthand. Of course, The Ides of March is a work of fiction. However, the movie portrays the idea that politics is a dirty game, which is certainly the case in America. It's my favorite directorial effort from Clooney, who firmly grasps the melodramatic beats and scandalous plot twists. For our country's sake, I hope the plot of this movie doesn't play out on Election Day. 1 Heat Pacino vs. De Niro I could spend hours writing about Heat, but I'll try to keep it to a few hundred words. Although Al Pacino and Robert De Niro both starred in The Godfather Part II, they never appeared in the same scene. Then, Michael Mann did the Lord's work by casting Pacino and De Niro in the crime movie Heat, and this time, the Oscar winners would go mano a mano. In Los Angeles, Neil McCauley (De Niro) is a master thief who takes scores for a living. McCauley is a disciplined leader who won't get attached to anything he's not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds if he feels heat around the corner. McCauley and his crew—including Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer) and Michael Cheritto (Tom Sizemore)—are planning one final bank robbery before walking away from crime. On the other side of the conflict is Lieutenant Vincent Hanna (Pacino) of the LAPD. Hanna has a watchdog mentality and will do whatever it takes to take down McCauley. No one shoots crime stories in Los Angeles like Mann. Heat is an immersive movie, from the blistering sound of gunshots to its on-location shooting throughout the city. It's a chess match between good and evil, but the brilliance of Heat lies in its exploration of the gray area. McCauley is an honorable criminal, while Hanna is a cop with questionable ethics. Do yourself a favor and watch the diner scene. After you've experienced that masterclass, watch the entire movie from its brilliant start to its perfect ending. Heat Release Date December 15, 1995 What else is on Netflix? If you're looking for more recommendations, here are two other Netflix titles worth adding to your watchlist. One of the best reboots on Netflix is Cobra Kai, a continuation of The Karate Kid saga that becomes a worthy sequel. Another recommendation is Instadocs: AI Gone Wild, a brilliant Netflix documentary about a hacking scandal that will blow your mind.
