3 billion push: US firm plans 50% expansion in chip research capacity

American Fortune 500 company Lam Research plans to invest more than $3 billion over the next five years to expand its global research and development laboratory network, strengthening semiconductor research capabilities across the United States, Asia, and Europe. The US semiconductor equipment manufacturer will begin the multi-site expansion in 2026, aiming to increase its experimental capacity by more than 50%. The investment is designed to shorten product development cycles as chipmakers demand new materials, architectures, and manufacturing processes to support increasingly complex computing systems. A 24-hour global research network Lam’s worldwide laboratory infrastructure currently supports more than one million experiments annually. Rather than operating as isolated facilities, its laboratories share equipment data, research findings, and specialist expertise across locations and time zones. This integrated structure allows research to continue around the clock. A discovery made at one facility can quickly become available to researchers and engineers elsewhere, enabling multiple stages of semiconductor development to move forward simultaneously. The network includes laboratories dedicated to foundational work involving new chemicals, materials, and mechatronic systems. Lam said these facilities can reduce several weeks of experimental work to just a few days in some cases. Process development laboratories then move promising discoveries closer to commercial production. Engineers, product developers, and manufacturing teams work on the same equipment, while technology centers located near customer facilities help validate processes alongside customers’ engineering teams. Development speeds rise up to 2.5 times Lam said its global approach has enabled process development to proceed up to 2.5 times faster during recent customer projects. The planned expansion will add both infrastructure and technical capabilities, helping the company move new technologies from early research to semiconductor fabrication plants more quickly. “In the AI era, the pace of innovation is relentless, requiring chips with new architectures, different materials, and complex features engineered with nanoscale precision. The investment comes as advanced computing drives greater demand for deposition, etching, packaging, and lithography technologies. These processes help manufacturers build denser and more power-efficient chips while controlling performance, cost, and physical size.
