Along with his blog, Dalton's critical essays on film have been published in various places online. The last weekend list for the month of August is designed to honor a legend, and a Tim Curry classic tops this trio of great movies streaming on HBO Max right now. Last time, we took a look at a selection of films at random, and this weekend's list is similar in that regard. The movies come from several eras and encompass multiple genres too. Though HBO Max is perhaps best known for its stellar TV shows, it's also a go-to spot for great movies. The catalog is significantly smaller than its competitors, but there's strength in its curated selection. Nearly every movie on Max is worth watching, and that goes for its newest releases as well. Film history is represented in the HBO Max library, as well as future classics right out of theaters. Because there is so much diversity on the streaming service, these weekend lists often seem like a random assortment. That's because they are specifically written to offer Max subscribers a wide range of what's available on the platform. Instead of sticking to one theme or genre, it's best to spread the love around and shine light on everything. The passing of Tim Curry has sparked a renewed interest in his filmography, and this weekend's list is headlined by one of the actor's most iconic projects. It's also joined by Alfred Hitchcock's most underrated movie, and a raunchy comedy that's sure to invoke a lot of 2000s nostalgia. Beating the lat summer heat is easy when there are so many great movies to watch on HBO Max. 3 Wedding Crashers (2005) It's safe to say that a movie like Wedding Crashers wouldn't get made today, and it hearkens back to a bygone era of comedy. The Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson vehicle was a mega-hit back in 2005, and holds a lot of nostalgia for viewers of a certain age. Two men get their kicks by crashing wedding parties, but their biggest score yet presents some unique challenges. The sex comedy romp is brash and raunchy, and that's part of its appeal. Perfect for a streaming platform, Wedding Crashers is the kind of movie that can be played on repeat. The lines are quotable, and it has a stacked cast, even if its plot and message are razor-thin. HBO Max features a ton of great comedy, but there's a reason that the 2005 blockbuster keeps finding its way into the streamer's top 10 list each week. That reason is simply that the movie is very funny. 2 The Wrong Man (1956) Alfred Hitchcock is a director that needs no introduction, and the Master of Suspense produced a myriad of classics during his long career behind the camera. The Wrong Man is one such gem, but it is routinely overlooked as one of the all-time great thrillers. A struggling musician is mistaken for a robber, and struggles to hold it together as his life begins to slowly unravel. The noir-inspired outing is understated compared to other Hitchcock masterpieces. The Wrong Man is a bona fide drama, and is legitimately engrossing. Henry Fonda is perfectly cast as the everyman in way over his head, and he lends a sense of reality to the story. Don't be distracted by the movie's age, The Wrong Man is so good that it puts most modern thrillers to shame. It's a new arrival on HBO Max, and absolutely shouldn't be missed. 1 It (1990) This one stretches the scope of the list just a bit, but Stephen King's It is just too good to ignore. The two-part TV movie features the late Tim Curry in one of his defining roles, and his turn as Pennywise continues to give audiences nightmares more than 35 years after the fact. In the '60s and '90s, a group of friends does battle against a supernatural monster that appears as a creepy clown. The film adapts the highlights of King's massive bestselling novel. While it certainly suffers from a lot of early 1990s cheese, It is nostalgic and quirky, and features some legitimately creepy moments. Most importantly, it's a platform for the genius that was Tim Curry, and he essentially builds the Pennywise character from the ground up. It might not be the best Stephen King movie on HBO Max, but it is worth a revisit in the year 2026.
