Sign in to your ScreenRant account Disney+ is the streaming service to go to this weekend if you are looking for sci-fi, fantasy or superhero movies, with three huge recommendations for fans of those genres. On last weekend's Disney+ movie recommendations, I talked about why subscribers should give a chance to Hocus Pocus 2, Coraline, and Soulm8te. That list was clearly tailored with suitable movies for Halloween in mind. With the holiday and October now behind us, I decided to cast horror aside for our new Disney+ movie recommendations, though it is worth mentioning that Dakota Fanning's dark fantasy continues to trend, as Coraline is currently the 9th most popular movie on Disney+ in the United States. Still, with the start of a new month, it is better to make it a fresh start. As such, rather than having darker recommendations on the Disney+ list, subscribers should turn their attention to exciting adventures set in immersive worlds and with characters many have grown to love over the years. For one reason or the other, these three movies have once again become timely options on Disney+ this weekend. One of them sits in the hall of the best animated movies of all time, starting a franchise, which is exactly what a live-action superhero movie whose characters will soon return also did. Closing the list is a massive space opera that is part of one of the highest-grossing movie franchises of all time, and it is also set to return with new releases. These are the best movies to watch on Disney+ this weekend: 3 Monsters, Inc. (2001) Monsters, Inc. is both the only animated movie on the list and the only entry that is currently trending on the streaming service, as it stands as the 5th most popular movie on Disney+ in the United States. If you are looking for a film the whole family can watch together, no matter the viewer's age, and still have a blast, then Monsters, Inc. is the perfect option for doing just that. The animated fantasy film introduces a world inhabited by monsters in which two best friends in the city of Monstropolis, which is devoted to using human children's screams for energy, embark on a wild journey that ends up revolutionizing their world. Monsters, Inc. packs a lot of heart and pitch-perfect humor, exploring a unique world filled with colorful characters of which John Goodman's Sulley and Billy Crystal's Mike Wazowski, with their electric banter, are front and center. 2 X-Men (2000) The only superhero movie on the list is 2000's X-Men, which was the first film in Fox's original X-Men movie timeline, starring actors like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, James Marsden as Cyclops, and many more. There are a couple of key reasons why X-Men comes up as a perfect watch 26 years later, with the first of them being as a way to remember how the work of the excellent Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier began, following the actor's recent death. The other connects to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as multiple actors from that very movie will be returning as their X-Men heroes and villains in Avengers: Doomsday, which releases in theaters on December 18. As such, X-Men is a crucial step in anyone's rewatch marathon ahead of the MCU's new Avengers movie, and it just so happens to be one of the best superhero movies of all time, which certainly helps. 1 Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) Finally, Avatar: Fire and Ash is both one of the highest-grossing movies ever, with $1.5 billion worldwide, and also a space opera that finds new ways to keep a long-running franchise fresh. James Cameron's first Avatar movie was released in theaters in 2009. Since then, the sci-fi universe has found new ways to reinvent itself with every new release, with Fire and Ash doing so through the debut of the Mangkwan Clan, aka the Ash People. Their barren wasteland of a biome contrasts with the lush forests of Pandora and the glistening blue oceans of the previous movies, making for exciting visual flair. Avatar: Fire and Ash continues to push the boundaries of what CGI and 3D can do in film, with cutting-edge technology for both. The sci-fi movie is also an action-packed event with a surprising bond between franchise characters Jake Sully and Colonel Miles Quaritch, and the debut of the frightening villain Varang, the leader of the Ash People, played by Oona Chaplin. It is a solid final note for our Disney+ movie recommendations.
