The IMMERSIO CTP battery system: built for marine electrification with twice the energy density.XING Direct liquid cooling is moving into ship engine rooms with the introduction of the IMMERSIO Matrix. This energy storage system is designed to solve the primary technical challenges of maritime electrification. In this setup, developed by Taiwan-based XING Mobility, every lithium cell is fully submerged in an electrically non-conductive dielectric liquid. The fluid absorbs heat directly from the surface of each cell as soon as it is generated. “The coolant inherently suppresses thermal runaway, eliminates cell-to-cell propagation, and removes the ignition pathways that exist in air-cooled and cold-plate-cooled designs,” explained the company in a press release. Because the liquid controls temperatures effectively, the battery can sustain a continuous 3C discharge rate. “For fast ferries, port service vessels and any duty cycle built around hard acceleration and rapid charging between trips, this is the performance level that finally makes battery-electric propulsion a true replacement for diesel,” added the press release. The immersion-cooled system supports these heavy-duty cycles without overheating, providing a viable electric alternative to conventional marine diesel engines. Energy density optimization for scalability The architecture also removes the need for bulky cooling plates, air ducts, and wide safety gaps between individual modules. As a result, the cell-to-pack configuration doubles both the gravimetric and volumetric energy density compared to standard marine batteries. “XING delivers twice the energy density of conventional marine batteries, offering more usable energy per kilogram and significantly more per cubic meter,” highlighted the company. This compact design is especially useful for vessel retrofits, where engineers must install electric systems inside existing engine rooms without reducing space for cargo or passengers. The hardware platform comes in scalable capacities between 60 kWh and 400 kWh and is currently undergoing the formal classification process for DNV marine certification. Step toward real-world deployments The system will make its official European debut at the Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo in Amsterdam this June. The rollout targets European fleet operators working to meet strict regional environmental rules, including the FuelEU Maritime framework and the EU Emissions Trading System. To handle regional engineering, installation, and field service across Europe, XING Mobility is partnering with Nordic Booster AS. “We chose XING because their immersion-cooled architecture is, simply put, the safest and most power-dense battery system available for marine use today,” noted Trond Skaufel, CEO of Nordic Booster. The underlying battery platform is already operating on the water. In Taiwan, the zero-emission vessel Porrima P111 uses the immersion-cooled pack in open-ocean conditions. In Europe, Austrian electric-boat maker Smart IQ completed integration and functional system tests on its newest vessel in late April 2026. XING Mobility set up a dedicated mass-production facility for immersion battery hardware in 2024. The company builds its systems around a unified architecture that combines fluid cooling, physical protection, electrical controls, and safety mechanisms into one package. “The platform has since been extended across commercial vehicles, agricultural machinery, marine applications, energy storage, and AI data center infrastructure,” concluded the press release.
