Sign in to your ScreenRant account While Buffy the Vampire Slayer has some of the wittiest dialogue in fantasy TV history, Willow Rosenberg's best line drastically differs from the show's typical "Buffy speak". Through its protagonist, the series modernized the concept of the fantasy heroine, with Buffy Summers' best quotes famously undercutting mortal peril with glib, youthful one-liners, from "I'm not exactly quaking in my stylish yet affordable boots" to "If the apocalypse comes, beep me." As Buffy's shy best friend, it takes Willow almost all seven seasons of Buffy to build up a fraction of the Slayer's confidence. As such, Willow's dialogue is often defined by its earnestness and insecure hedging (ie., "I think I'm kinda gay"). In contrast, her villainous alter egos, Vampire Willow and Dark Willow, are blunt and intimidating, with "Bored now" being the most famous example. Willow is often remembered as the dorky wallflower of Buffy season 1 or the magic-addicted Dark Willow of season 6, but she has an entire arc in between, with season 3 being particularly pivotal for her character. She may still be figuring out who she is, both as a witch and as a woman, but Willow has proven herself thoroughly capable in the face of adversity, whether it's facing down the Hellmouth's forces or darkness or, perhaps even scarier, telling Oz she likes him. In season 3, Willow delivers her best line, defining not only what makes her special but the entire show. Willow’s “It’s A Good Fight, Buffy, And I Want In” Quote Celebrates What Fantasy TV Is All About Buffy season 3 marks the Scooby Gang's last year of high school, so naturally, the teens are all thinking about college and post-secondary plans. As Sunnydale High's top student, Willow has her pick of elite schools, including Oxford, which would put her an ocean away from Buffy and the Hellmouth. However, that's not what Willow chooses to do, informing Buffy that she'll be joining her at UC Sunnydale in the fall. This comes on the heels of Willow having been captured by Faith and the Mayor. Though Willow has put her life on the line before in the show, she has never been in this much personal danger. It would be enough to make most people flee the vampire-infested town for good, but not Willow. If anything, it solidifies what Willow wants to do with her life, which is, "fight evil, help people." "It's a good fight, Buffy, and I want in," she tells her best friend. As much as fantasy fans love watching Buffy and other superpowered individuals save the world, the real thrill comes from seeing ordinary people, like Willow, do heroic things. Willow doesn't have a prescribed destiny like Buffy, which makes her decision even braver and more of a noble sacrifice. The best fantasy TV shows often have found family at their core, and by Willow choosing to remain in Sunnydale, she's keeping that found family alive. Buffy and the Scoobies were thrown together as teenagers attending the same high school, but as adults, they have the agency to make their own decisions. Willow would be well within her rights to close the book on her evil-battling era, but the fight is too good. Without it, there would be no fantasy TV. Buffy Became Iconic Because Of Lines Like Willow’s Quote Buffy Summers is a great character, but Buffy's magic lies in it being a true teen drama ensemble, with every member of the Scooby Gang bringing something to the table. Xander's "extraordinary" speech is a rallying cry for the heroism of average Joes, while Cordelia's entire arc taught the audience never to underestimate the power of a popular cheerleader. Willow's "It's a good fight, Buffy" line comes after a speech in which she explains that her choice isn't about Buffy. Though the show is called Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Willow isn't Buffy's sidekick, and she's not simply following in her best friend's post-secondary footsteps. Willow knows where she's meant to be, and this is the moment when she becomes Buffy's equal in "the fight." AMystic Falls BSunnydale CSanta Carla DBeacon Hills ✓ Correct! Sunnydale, California sits atop the Hellmouth, a portal to demon dimensions that attracts supernatural activity like a magnet. The town’s ironic name — sunny and pleasant on the surface, literally hellish underneath — perfectly captures the show’s tone. ✗ Staked! The answer is Sunnydale. Mystic Falls is from The Vampire Diaries, Santa Carla is from The Lost Boys, and Beacon Hills is from Teen Wolf. Only Sunnydale sits on the Hellmouth. ATheir dreams BTheir hearts CTheir memories DTheir voices ✓ Correct! The Gentlemen steal everyone’s voices, rendering the entire town unable to speak or scream. The episode is famous for having almost no dialogue, forcing the cast to communicate through physical acting. It earned Buffy its only Emmy nomination for writing. ✗ Staked! The episode’s near-total lack of dialogue made it one of the most innovative hours in TV history and earned the show its only Emmy writing nomination. The answer is witchcraft and magic. Willow’s journey from timid hacker to world-ending witch is one of Buffy’s most compelling arcs. Her addiction to dark magic in Season 6 and eventual mastery of her powers in Season 7 show the full spectrum of her character. After seeking out a soul of his own free will — unlike Angel, who was cursed with one — Spike sacrifices himself in the series finale to close the Hellmouth and save the world. ✗ Staked! The answer is Spike. Angelus is Angel’s evil alter ego, Drusilla is Spike’s sire and former love, and Darla is Angel’s sire. Only Spike made the journey from Big Bad to self-sacrificing hero, choosing to earn his soul rather than having it forced upon him. REVEAL MY SCORE → Sunnydale · Patrol Complete Your Slayer Record 🗡 / 8 Chosen One — or just another Sunnydale civilian? ↻ SLAY AGAIN Buffy is a show all about badass female characters: Buffy has Slayer strength, Cordelia is unapologetically herself, and Willow hones her witchcraft skills to the point where, albeit with some dark missteps along the way, she becomes the most powerful character in the entire series. None of that would have happened were it not for the quiet bravery she showed in this Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 3 scene. Like Buffy, we "kind of love" Willow for making the show what it is.
