26 Years Later, Gladiator's Best Quote Is Still One Of The Most Epic In Movie History

He survives, but it's a grim situation, leaving Maximus a broken man with nothing to lose. As fate would have it, Maximus eventually ends up fighting in the Colosseum alongside other gladiators. He quickly becomes a sensation with the crowd, leaning on his skills as a battle-hardened warrior. That popularity keeps Maximus alive when Commodus learns his identity, as simply killing a Colosseum favorite would reflect terribly on him. Crowe is phenomenal as Maximus, a serious character with a tragic past we can't help but root for. Phoenix is arguably just as brilliant, playing a vile villain easy to hate. Gladiator is beloved for its grand spectacle and intense action set pieces against a wonderfully detailed backdrop. The movie also features some incredible, hard-hitting quotes and powerful speeches. Fans of the 2000 classic can quote much of Maximus's dialogue, and some of his lines are so inspired they stuck with audiences long after the credits. Gladiator's "Vengeance" Quote Is A Truly Epic Movie Moment Gladiator is jam-packed with brilliant quotes. "Are you not entertained?" became part of pop culture, but the scene where Commodus learns Maximus's identity in the Colosseum remains incredibly powerful, even during a rewatch. At first, Maximus claims his name is Gladiator before turning away. When Commodus commands him to turn around and give his name, he removes his helmet. Maximus slowly turns around and says, "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius. Commander of the armies of the north, general of the Felix legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next." Maximus's speech hits so hard because he says it with fury and absolute conviction, though Commodus's reaction is arguably just as important. He looks terrified, and we see the emperor visibly tremble in fear. His guards ready themselves, as Commodus is forced to make a quick decision with all the eyes in the Colosseum on him. As the audience chants "Live!", Commodus raises his hand and gestures with his thumb up, reluctantly sparing Maximus's life. Gladiator is such a remarkable movie because some of the speeches are just as exciting and tense as the action scenes. Crowe and Phoenix are phenomenal when they meet in the Colosseum, and we immediately understand the gravity of their encounter. Gladiator's Second Greatest Quote Is Less Epic, But Just As Impactful Maximus' vengeance speech is arguably his most powerful in Gladiator. However, we already know he is a rousing speaker from a motivational speech with his army near the beginning of the movie. He addresses his men before they engage the Germanic tribes. Maximus says, "Hold the line. Stay with me. You find yourself alone riding in green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled, for you are in Elysium, and you're already dead!" The soldiers laugh, and it's clear there is strong camaraderie between Maximus and his men, and that they respect him. He concludes his speech with, "Brothers! What we do in life echoes in eternity." Those final words aren't part of a spectacle as grand as the Colosseum scene, but they are incredibly poignant nonetheless. There's also arguably a deeper meaning. Maximus believes he has nothing left to live for when his son and wife are killed. But his actions during the movie will be remembered long after he has passed away. Gladiator 2 Didn't Come Close To Matching The First Movie's Quotability Ridley Scott returned to the franchise with Gladiator II in 2024. The movie takes place 16 years after the events of Gladiator. In many ways, the sequel gives Maximus's "What we do in life echoes in eternity" speech even more impact, as we can see what happened after he died. Gladiator II is certainly not devoid of great performances. Denzel Washington, in particular, is exceptional as Macrinus, who owns a stable of gladiators and is an influential figure in Rome. The movie also boasts several great quotes, though they arguably fail to reach the lofty highs of the 2000 original. That said, there are more than a few memorable quotes in Gladiator II. Under the name Hanno, Lucius, (Paul Mescal) recites poetry to the two Emperors, Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger). He tells them, "The gates of hell are open night and day. Smooth is the descent, and easy is the way. But to come back from hell and view the cheerful skies, in this the task and mighty labor lies." It's a loaded quote, considering who Lucius is speaking to, even if Macrinus quickly dismisses any deeper meanings. Macrinus also has a great exchange with Lucius when he explains how he picks his gladiators. He proudly tells Lucius he picks his gladiators for their rage and says, "Crowd loves blood, and they love those who love blood as much as they do, and you, my friend, rage." It's a powerful line. Gladiator II even references quotes from the original Gladiator, but arguably doesn't contain lines with the same gravitas as the 2000 movie.
