Several iconic games were released during the console’s lifetime, including Grand Theft Auto 3, one of the highest-rated games of all time. Similarly, the fan-favorites Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City were also released on the PlayStation 2. The PS2 was also a stage for expansion on top of formulas that already existed, as well as brand-new experimentation. For example, there was a perfect trilogy released on PS2 25 years ago, and now members of PS Plus can play those three games entirely for free using their membership. Games like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and Resident Evil 4 also made history alongside Sony’s console in the early 2000s. Nevertheless, one of the best PlayStation 2 games was a sequel to one of the best PlayStation 1 games, and it’s still widely considered a powerful sequel, even 25 years later. This 2001 Game Was Innovative On The PlayStation 2 In 2001, Konami made history once again with the release of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Created and directed by the legendary Hideo Kojima, this action-adventure game was a direct sequel to Metal Gear Solid, released in 1998. Retaining several of the gameplay elements that made the original title great, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was ahead of its time, especially when it came to the stealth-focused mechanics that made it so popular. One of the things that made Sons of Liberty stand out at the time was how precise it was. Using first-person shooting, you could tactically take out enemies in a single shot or perhaps strike them in specific areas. The game also revolutionized how intelligent enemy AI was, making them react to different types of prompts, like footprints and even heartbeats. You could also interact with the world in brand-new ways. A whole new world of stealth mechanics was created with what is considered the best Metal Gear Solid game. On top of how great and revolutionary the gameplay felt, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was also ahead of its time with its storytelling, and one of its pillars was the subversion of expectations. Ahead of launch, players were led to believe that Solid Snake would return, and that is true, but only partially. One of Hideo Kojima’s decisions for Metal Gear Solid 2 was to hide the fact that players would play the majority of the campaign with Raiden, a brand-new character. The game addressed information overload and manipulation long before social media exacerbated this practice. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was truly a fantastic video game and a discussion about the future, even if somewhat unknowingly. It’s also widely considered one of the best games on PlayStation 2, and it’s still completely understandable why it retains that accolade.
