25 Years Later, Jessica Jones Creators Return For Brand New Alias Series

Although it was retroactively established that Jessica Jones first appeared 1963’s The Amazing Spider-Man #4 as one of Peter Parker’s classmates, the character has only truly been around for the last 25 years. Writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Gaydos created Jessica for the 2001 series Alias, which was published under Marvel’s MAX imprint. Originally a superhero named Jewel, Jessica gave up the costumed crimefighting life following a traumatic experience, and found a new line of work by opening up Alias Private Investigations. Though Alias ended in 2003 after 28 issues, Jessica Jones has become an important character in the wider Marvel universe, with the character continuing to use her powers and private investigator skills for good, as well as marrying Luke Cage and having a daughter named Danielle with him. Jessica has also been portrayed by Krysten Ritter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2015. This December, Bendis and Gaydos are reuniting for the five-issue limited series Jessica Jones: Alias. Jessica Jones Gets A New Comic Series For 25th Anniversary Following her eventful time as New York City’s First Lady, Jessica Jones: Alias follows its titular protagonist “looking to get back to basics,” though like so many things in her life, this won’t go the way she wants. What starts out as a “simple abduction case” involving a missing child with powers, whom Jessica suspects might be a mutant, will see her venturing into “the most obscure and bizarre corners of the Marvel Universe.” That includes Latveria and The Savage Land. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bendis noted how Jessica Jones: Alias features “a very different Jessica Jones than the hot mess we introduced 25 years ago in the very first issue.” The writer added that upon seeing the family of this missing child broken apart, “she can’t help but feel what that would feel like in her more complicated family dynamic with Luke Cage and the children.” That’s why she agrees to take the case, though “it immediately rips her life apart in every possible way.” Jessica Jones: Alias Is The Character’s Second 25th Anniversary Comic Earlier this year, Marvel first commemorated Jessica Jones’ 25th anniversary with Alias: Red Band. Written by Sam Humphries and illustrated by Geraldo Borges, this five-issue limited series followed Jessica teaming up with Typhoid Mary to track down a killer behind a series of brutal murders in Hell’s Kitchen. Cover artist David Mack, who worked with Bendis and Gaydos on the original Alias series, handled Red Band’s covers as well, and he’ll do the same for Jessica Jones: Alias. Outside the comics, 2026 also saw Ritter reprising Jessica in Daredevil: Born Again season 2. This marked her first time playing the character since the original Jessica Jones TV series ended in 2019, while Ritter’s Jessica Jones and Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock hadn’t been seen together since The Defenders in 2017. Ritter will be back for Daredevil: Born Again season 3 next year, and fellow Defenders actors Mike Colter and Finn Jones will also reprise Luke Cage and Iron Fist, respectively.
