Abortions have been performed since the dawn of civilization. Snopes hasn't been around nearly as long, but we've spent decades looking into claims surrounding the controversial medical intervention. For example, we've investigated whether birth control counts as abortion, and if athletes have intentionally conceived and terminated pregnancies to gain performance-enhancing hormonal benefits. In the modern era, the right to access an abortion has remained a political flashpoint, both in the United States and across the globe. For example, after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v.
