2026's X-Files Reboot Gets Official Release Window, And It's Only Months Away

After the controversial revival seasons on Hulu concluded, fans were eager to hear what was next for the franchise, only to be met with radio silence for years. 2026 changed that. Just recently, it was announced that Black Panther and Creed director Ryan Coogler was going to bring the franchise back with two new leads, and while Mulder and Scully appearances have been teased, it's clear that they're no longer the franchise's focus. That's where Dynamite Comics comes in. Dynamite recently unveiled their own X-Files reboot from writer Joe Harris and artist Riley Brown. Though Dynamite hasn't given fans much in the way of plot details, Dynamite has confirmed that the new X-Files comic will launch in December of 2026. The announcement comes hot off the heels of Dynamite delaying its anticipated Firefly comic. Though Dynamite had initially stated in their press release announcing the delay that the first issue of the X-Files comic would release in February 2027, they later amended that to say that the series would instead launch in December. Why X-Files Fans Should Be Excited For The 2025 Reboot While very little information is known about Dynamite's X-Files reboot outside of its December release, what is known should be more than enough to entice fans. In addition to a cover, fans were also given new character designs for Mulder and Scully from artist Riley Brown. The designs clearly evoke David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson's classic looks from The X-Files' original run rather than their later appearances in 2008's I Want To Believe or from the 2016 and 2018 Hulu seasons. Given that a few Dynamite comics adapting big TV series have been interquels taking place between seasons, it seems likely that their X-Files comic will take a similar route. Mulder and Scully spent roughly seven years together as partners until the former's disappearance at the end of The X-Files' seventh season, so there are certainly more than a few blank spaces for the creative team behind the book to fill in if they so choose. What should have fans excited instead of trepidatious for the new comics is the presence of writer Joe Harris. Before the actual revival seasons aired on Hulu, Harris had written season 10 and 11 comics alongside X-Files creator Chris Carter. These comics were met with a warm reception, and they even undid or reversed some of the more controversial changes to X-Files canon made in seasons 8 and 9 of the original series (such as the fates of the fan-favorite Lone Gunmen). Dynamite Is On A Truly Impressive Run While big reboots of classic TV properties have proven controversial lately, Dynamite has managed to make the process look easy. 2026 has seen Dynamite either pick up or continue massively popular franchises such as Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Supernatural, and Firefly. With incredible creative teams and bold new visions, Dynamite continues to produce hit after hit, reminding fans why they fell in love with these properties in the first place. Given this, there's every reason to expect that The X-Files will be another slam dunk for Dynamite. With Mulder and Scully being written by someone with a deep appreciation for the franchise's rich lore, all signs point to Dynamite's The X-Files reboot being a return to form after a few disappointing attempts to bring the franchise back.
