The Matrix is rightfully considered one of the most genre-defining sci-fi films of all time, with its exploration of a world wherein reality itself is altered by advanced machines being a premise countless stories have delved into since it further popularized the concept. Of course, many releases have done so in their own distinctive ways, since the world would be much less interesting if every movie that drew inspiration from or had a similar premise to the Matrix movie series simply rehashed its exact story and tone throughout. Interestingly, despite The Matrix itself being a striking success, some of the film's most recent successors have had more underdog stories. Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die Is Effectively A Dark Comedy Version Of The Matrix Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die takes the same basic premise of The Matrix, and amps up both the horror and comedy aspects of its plot, leading to a drastically different overall film. The plot of the 2026 movie sees its central character, played by Sam Rockwell, repeatedly journeying through a time loop wherein he recruits members of an American dinner and leads them on a journey to try and save the world from an impending AI dystopian apocalypse he's traveled back in time from, with it steadily becoming clear that reality as the characters know it is being tampered with. Much like The Matrix, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die uses this sci-fi setup for a range of truly unique action sequences, and some movie moments that couldn't happen in basically any other film. Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die also reveals it has its own chosen one of sorts in the film's ending - much like Neo is revealed to be the chosen one in The Matrix - which reveals why Sam Rockwell's main character was unable to reach the final leg of his quest until one fateful run through the time loop that we see on-screen. This adds further similarities between the two films, and suggests further that Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die is actively playing with the kind of story tropes movies like The Matrix made famous. That said, it uses arguably more surreal imagery by the time it's done, if only because The Matrix doesn't have a giant monster that seems like some nightmarish version of all the internet's cat memes combined. Though the premise and spectacle of Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die does seem to be of the scale that would resonate with audiences, the theatrical results of the film reflect that it didn't quite catch the attention of audiences upon its February 2026 debut.
