After 20 years, the best line Timothy Olyphant ever delivered as Seth Bullock on Deadwood is still one of the best quotes in Western history. Long before his roles in Justified and The Mandalorian cemented him as an icon of the Western genre, Deadwood gave Timothy Olyphant his first lawman role. Deadwood remains one of Olyphant's best roles to this day, 20 years later, partially because it's also one of the best TV shows ever made. The main reason Deadwood has been such an enduring part of Olyphant's career, however, is because of the character he played, Seth Bullock. Not only was Bullock one of the main characters of Deadwood, but he was also one of the few morally good characters in the entire series, and Olyphant played him exceptionally well. Bullock was always ready to go toe to toe with Ian McShane's Al Swearengen or threaten a dramatic shootout in the middle of the street, and he's one of the best lawmen in Western history. Seth Bullock also had more than his fair share of great quotes. While Seth wasn't particularly verbose or eloquent like Swearengen, and most of his best quotes were expletive-filled one-liners that made him seem cool under pressure, he was also remarkably observant. He could dispense great wisdom on occasion, like "People angry at their difficulties often act like fucking idiots." Bullock's best quote in Deadwood, however, didn't come until the last episode of the show, some 20 years ago now, but it has stood the test of time remarkably well. Timothy Olyphant’s Best Deadwood Quote Comes In Season 3 The best line Timothy Olyphant ever delivered as Seth Bullock came right at the end of Deadwood, in the season 3 finale, "Tell Him Something Pretty." That episode already had one of the best closing lines in Western history, but Bullock's is just as good. During a tense confrontation with the villainous George Hearst, Bullock shouts at him and says, "Every bully I ever met can't shut his fucking mouth. Except when he's afraid." There's a lot to love about this line. In the context of the scene, Hearst has unequivocally won. He's intimidated Alma Garrett into surrendering her land, and he's well on his way to dominating the entire town. Even in the face of utter defeat, Seth speaks up and tells it like it is: he tells Hearst to his face, futile as it may be, that he's not going to take his abuse lying down. It's exactly the kind of scene that made Clint Eastwood's characters so iconic: a good man looking evil in the face and refusing to back down. There's also quite a bit of truth to Bullock's quote. In one of his rare moments of wisdom, Seth says something that's applicable to real life. Bullies really do never know when to shut up, and it's only when good men stand up to them that they stop blathering. It even serves one of Deadwood's larger themes and Seth's character arc as a whole, that evil can steamroll an entire community if good people meet it with apathy. For his part, Timothy Olyphant also did a tremendous job of delivering the line. Seth was always a furious man in Deadwood, and Olyphant delivers this quote like his head is about to explode with rage. He shows that it takes everything in Seth to keep him from gunning Hearst down on the spot, and his righteous anger is just one of the many great qualities Bullock had that made him so memorable. It's a great quote for Seth, for Deadwood, and for Westerns in general. Seth Bullock’s Greatest Line Defines Him As An Iconic Western Lawman Arguably the best part of Seth Bullock's bully quote isn't the quote itself, but how well it encapsulates Bullock as both a character and as a lawman. Throughout Deadwood, Seth Bullock is battling himself. At the start of the show, he claims to want nothing more than to stay out of trouble and grow rich via his hardware store. By the end of the first season, he's willingly become the sheriff of Deadwood, and this quote explains exactly why. For all his notions of apathy, Seth Bullock was a man ruled by righteous anger. He could never watch evil happen and not try to stop it. By nature, Bullock couldn't stand back and watch. If there was even a chance that he could stand up to a bully like Hearst or Swearengen, he would. This quote, and the way Olyphant delivers it, is dripping with hatred. Bullock hated bullies and injustice, and he'd rather die trying to stop them than sit back and let them win. His sense of justice was in his blood, and he almost chomped at Hearst like an attack dog pulling on a chain, eager for a fight. Bullock's sense of righteousness wasn't the only part of him this quote encapsulates, however. Hearst's response, "You mistake for fear, Mr. Bullock, what is, in fact, preoccupation. I'm having a conversation you cannot hear," says just as much about Seth. When the other power players of Deadwood were scheming and plotting, Seth could only ever see what was right in front of him. He was outclassed by men who were much more vile than him at every turn, held back by his short temper and his unwillingness to think about the big picture. This quote even gets at the complicated relationships Seth had in Deadwood, particularly with Alma. Seth delivers this line just as Hearst makes a comment about Alma's perfume, and despite their rocky romance, previous miscarriage, and Seth rededicating himself to Martha, he can't help but try to defend her. Truly, this one quote and the context it's delivered in could tell anyone who watches Deadwood everything they need to know about Timothy Olyphant's Seth Bullock.
