20 Years Later, A 10/10 Nintendo DS Masterpiece Is Getting A Remake

It had countless classics over its long reign, plus a ton of remasters and remakes of older games like Chrono Trigger. It was a fantastic handheld because it often married old and new, serving as a link between generations. The dual-screen technology also helped usher in a lot of really cool, unique experiences that are tough to emulate on other platforms. Now, thanks to a new announcement from Level-5, we know another classic is coming back, but this time it'll be coming to more than just the Nintendo DS. In an official listing on Level-5's website, we know that a remake of the first Professor Layton game, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, which originally launched on the DS, will be coming next year. Buried at the bottom of the official announcement are platforms: PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2. Level-5 says it's aiming for a 2027 release and will support English, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Korean languages. If you've never played a Professor Layton game before, the premise for most of them simple: you star as the titular Layton (as well as his companion Luke), and you need to solve a mystery. Here's how the first game kicks off: "The tale begins as Professor Layton, a true English gentleman and famous archeologist, drives to the remote settlement of St. Mystere with his apprentice, Luke, in response to a request from the widow of a wealthy baron. The baron's will indicates that the family treasure, the Golden Apple, is hidden somewhere within the village, and whoever finds it will inherit the whole of the Reinhold Estate. The Professor and Luke must search the town for clues leading to the precious heirloom." In the remake, characters and exploration will be reimagined in 3D, providing "greater depth and richer detail" according to Level-5. We'll also be getting HD animations in widescreen, as opposed to the standard definition of the original DS source. Akira Tago, author of the Japanese puzzle book series Atama no Taisou, will also assist with this remake. Professor Layton and the Curious Village was an iconic puzzle game, and although it was ported to mobile devices eventually, it was incredibly special for the DS library.
