Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone may have ended in 2024, but the sprawling Western series is finally making a proper comeback next year. The ending of Yellowstone season 5 left a lot of fans of Sheridan's best television show wanting more, and not necessarily in a good way. The show's finale ended up being rather divisive, with several longtime viewers criticizing the ending for wrapping things up too hastily and not delivering the resolution they had been waiting years for. Despite the controversial ending, fans of Yellowstone still want more nearly two years after the original show ended. Taylor Sheridan, however, has set his sights on new stories. The Yellowstone prequel shows 1883 and 1923 are both finished, the spinoff series 1944 is still in development limbo, and most of Sheridan's upcoming projects aren't connected to Yellowstone, like Landman season 3 and the Call of Duty movie. Sheridan does, however, have two shows connected to Yellowstone in Marshals and Dutton Ranch, but those shows come with a caveat: Sheridan didn't write either of them. He serves as an executive producer on both, but he hasn't had a hand in them creatively. As such, neither Marshals nor Dutton Ranch are true sequels to Yellowstone. However, Dutton Ranch can soon continue Yellowstone two years after it ended thanks to a new development. Neither Of Yellowstone's Newest Spinoffs Are Proper Sequels To The Show CBS Since the ending of Yellowstone in 2024, the franchise has produced two sequel spinoff shows: Marshals and Dutton Ranch. Though they both take place after the ending of Yellowstone, neither of these shows are proper sequels to the original. That's easiest to see in Kayce Dutton's Marshals, which is a police procedural and thriller where Yellowstone was more of a soapy family drama, and which killed off a major Yellowstone character, Monica, off-screen. Dutton Ranch is much more similar to Yellowstone, between its decision not to kill off any Yellowstone characters and its focus on Beth and Rip's family dramas and troubles with the ranching industry, but it's also not a great sequel. The show doesn't take place in Montana, doesn't have the antagonistic family drama the Duttons are known for, and, importantly, didn't have Taylor Sheridan in a creative capacity, as he only worked as an executive producer, not a writer. Most of all, Dutton Ranch simply feels like a different show with very different characters. Beth and Rip may come from Yellowstone, but they're portrayed very differently. They're both extremely subdued; Beth is softer and more peaceful, unlike the fiery, mean-spirited, and quick-witted character fans came to love, while Rip is more subtle, less commanding, and also less mean. Dutton Ranch feels like Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser playing new characters rather than them reprising their roles as Beth and Rip, which isn't great for making the show feel like a sequel to Yellowstone. Dutton Ranch Season 2's Behind-The-Scenes Changes Can Make It A Proper Yellowstone Follow-Up Luckily for fans of the original series, Dutton Ranch season 2 has already announced some behind-the-scenes changes that will make it the proper Yellowstone sequel viewers have been waiting for. Dutton Ranch creator and showrunner Chad Feehan has reportedly been replaced by Benjamin Cavell. Additionally, Taylor Sheridan is taking a creative role for Dutton Ranch season 2, a change from his hands-off executive producer credit in season 1. Both of these changes are tremendous news for Dutton Ranch and its chances of feeling like a proper follow-up to Yellowstone. With a new showrunner, the series can course correct and give Beth and Rip new chances to be the characters fans fell in love with. Sheridan's more hands-on approach to the creative team can also help Dutton Ranch season 2 depict Beth and Rip more faithfully and give them back their big and boisterous personalities. With Cavell and Sheridan in charge, Dutton Ranch can finally become the Yellowstone sequel it was marketed as. The show won't feel like Beth and Rip are drastically different characters anymore, and fans will be able to get more of Beth's devastating put-downs and chaotic energy as well as Rip's tough and masculine moments defending her. More importantly, Dutton Ranch season 2 will finally feel like a continuation of Beth and Rip's story from Yellowstone.
