2 top Dems spark 2028 ticket talk at joint appearance: ‘We make a pretty good team’

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland appeared together at an event in Washington, DC, tied to Beshear’s new book.The joint appearance quickly sparked speculation that the two could be running mates on a White House ticket in two years. Talking to Politico, Beshear pointed to his 2023 re-election as Kentucky governor and said that he once assumed he would never have to run for office again.Now, he said, “I’m not sure that’s true.”But he insisted that the comment was not an announcement of a presidential bid. At the Washington book event, Moore, also mentioned as a potential 2028 White House candidate, told Beshear: “Our country needs you.”Fueling the 2028 ticket speculation, Beshear replied: “We make a pretty good team.”Beshear later acknowledged that it would likely be a crowded Democratic field in 2028, saying, “We may have a lot of great candidates.”Oscar winner George Clooney this month said that Beshear was one of the three Dems he could support for president, along with Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker. Moore stoked presidential buzz when he said earlier this month that he would be part of a “larger conversation” about the direction of the country. President Donald Trump is term-limited out of office, which will leave the presidency up for grabs in 2028. Former Vice President Kamala Harris, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, democratic socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and former US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg are among the names being mentioned on the Democratic side. Newsom has said he would stand down if Harris, his fellow Californian, again seeks the presidency. Harris lost the 2024 White House race to Trump. Vice President JD Vance is the favorite of many Republicans for the 2028 party nomination for president, although Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and others may jump in the ring.
