Published Aug 24, 2026, 10:00 AM EDT James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC. Since its relatively humble origins as a monthly black-and-white comic book series created from writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore, The Walking Dead really has grown to become a behemoth. As well as the main TV adaptation on AMC, there have been myriad spin-offs and debuts into other mediums, all of which add to the game's ever-increasing world. Over that time, plenty of characters have come and gone, some of whom immediately found a way into our hearts, while others deserved nothing but the most miserable of ends. One of the more memorable official adaptations was actually into video game form, and whilst it certainly gave us some genuinely noteworthy new faces, it also gave us one of the most tragic lines in gaming. Telltale Studios Any self-respecting fan will, at the very least, know about Telltale Studios' adaptation of The Walking Dead. Covering four "seasons," the game initially puts players in control of Lee, a convicted murderer (in a moment of rage), who is just trying to survive after the end of the world as he knows it. From there, he stumbles across Clementine, or Clem, a young girl who was hiding in a treehouse while she waits for her parents to come back from Savannah. They quickly bond and Lee becomes a caretaker of sorts as they set out on a journey to get Clem to her parents, who may or may not be alive at this point. The whole first season continues with this dynamic, as the two form an odd little family of their own, and Lee quickly becomes a provider, protector, and mentor. As is so often the case in The Walking Dead though, it all ends quite tragically, as Lee is bitten protecting Clem from the Stranger and walkers. Knowing he's going to die, he really knuckles down to prepare Clem for life without him, before they share a final moment together. In that moment, his parting words to the little one are "Keep that hair short," which is relatively mundane on the face of it, but really quite touching the more you think about it. Telltale Studios As well as being a useful tip in a zombie apocalypse, as long hair can get caught or pulled more easily, it also serves as a little signpost that his influence in her life will be there long after he has died. Indeed, as the story progresses from there, her distinctive haircut is always a reminder of him in moments where she's unsure or scared. It's a testament to the influence he had on her life, and how he essentially raised a child in a world where none of the usual rules are in play. It's incredibly sad in the moment, but his job was done, and Clementine had all the tools she needed to push on in the face of impossible odds. Though that adaptation of The Walking Dead has long since finished, that line will always stick out as one of the toughest goodbyes in gaming.
