120,000 TalkTalk customers sold off to new broadband firm in mega shake-up – what it means for you

AROUND 120,000 TalkTalk broadband customers are being automatically transferred to a new supplier in a major shake-up of the telecoms giant. The households, who currently have broadband or broadband and phone deals with TalkTalk, will be moved across to Rise Fibre in the coming months. The switch will boost Rise Fibre’s customer base to 250,000, while TalkTalk will still retain around 1.5million customers on its books. Rise Fibre is a relatively new full fibre broadband provider that only launched in June 2025. Sign up for the Money newsletter Thank you! It runs on the Openreach, CityFibre and 4th Utility networks, and full fibre is generally seen as more reliable than standard fibre, offering speeds up to 30 times faster. The move comes after TalkTalk sold its Origin broadband brand to Utility Warehouse last year. Both TalkTalk and Rise Fibre have been contacting affected customers since Monday August 3, and households don’t need to take any action for now. The transfer will happen automatically, and Rise Fibre says everyone moved across will have their broadband fully supported throughout. Customers will be able to keep using their existing Wi-Fi router, and broadband speeds should stay exactly the same. There should be no downtime during the switchover, but if service is lost for more than two working days, customers should be entitled to compensation from TalkTalk under Ofcom‘s rules. Most read in Money Anyone still under contract with TalkTalk will remain on the same deal, and will still face early termination charges if they try to leave early, unless they are within the 14-day cooling-off period. Monthly prices will not change, with Rise Fibre confirming customers will be billed and served by it “in the near future”. Customers are being urged to keep paying their bills as normal and not cancel any Direct Debits, as these will transfer automatically when accounts move over. Anyone who is out of contract with TalkTalk can leave penalty-free, and it may be worth shopping around to see if a better deal is available elsewhere. Comment now
