Trump's criticism and public scrutiny of the 24-hour cable news network have fueled online rumors and misinformation over the years. Published Sept. 24, 2026 In September 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump announced he was banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House due to coverage he found unfavorable and what he claimed was "fake news." The news organizations then sued the Trump administration, calling the ban a blatant violation of their First Amendment rights. A few days later, Trump told a CNN reporter, "You should not be here covering me," when the reporter asked him a question at the U.N. General Assembly in New York City. The reporter told Trump that the U.N. allowed CNN into the assembly. CNN is a particularly frequent target of Trump's vitriol on social media, where he often criticizes news coverage he deems unfavorable or "fake." That has fueled public scrutiny of the 24-hour cable news network, which in turn contributes to online rumors and misinformation.
