Directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock as the titular Girl of Steel, the new DCU movie is largely inspired by 2021's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. Thanks to being on a world orbiting a red sun like Krypton, Kara was as vulnerable as any normal human, which is why she could get drunk in the first place. However, this also meant that she started bleeding when the thug struck her. Surprised rather than hindered by the pain, Kara still manages to take out the thug despite her lack of Kryptonian powers she'd typically have under a yellow sun. Additionally, the line is also a solid homage to similar opening events in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with Kara similarly intervening while drunk to retrieve Ruthye's sword. “My Name Is Ruthye Marye Knoll Of The Danastia Clan” (Ruthye) Following the murder of her entire family in Supergirl, Ruthye refuses to give up when it comes to her mission of vengeance upon Krem. Repeatedly introducing herself as "Ruthye Marye Knoll of the Danastia Clan," the introduction and subsequent request for aid prove her determination, even if she does say it enough times that Kara can eventually repeat it word for word in exasperation. It's a tragic line, while also being one that carries similar sentiments to an ongoing motif in Woman of Tomorrow. In the original comic, both Ruthye and Kara say at different points in the story, "It's too big. We're too small." Essentially, both lines are about the feelings of powerlessness in the face of such significant tragedy and what can feel like overwhelming loss and darkness. “You Are Our Souls Bound For The Future” (Zor-El) Before Kara leaves Argo City, her father gives her one final piece of encouragement and hope. Telling his daughter that she carries the intertwined souls of both of her parents going forward, David Krumholtz's Zor-El is expressing the hope every good parent has that their child might be able to preserve what came before while building something even better. It's a great line that's full of genuine hope, one that's in stark contrast to Jor-El's much darker message to Kal-El in 2025's Superman, and the major twist that he wanted his son to conquer Earth and show no mercy while creating a New Krypton. “I’m The B**** Whose Dog You Shot” (Kara) Kara's final confrontation with Krem of the Yellow Hills in Supergirl delivers one of its biggest crowd-pleasing moments. Deciding to properly introduce herself as "the b**** whose dog you shot," Supergirl's epic line also pays homage to one of the comic's most iconic exchanges as well. In Woman of Tomorrow, Kara memorably tells Krem, "Hello, I'm Supergirl. And you're Krem of the Yellow Hills. You shot my f***ing dog." The movie understandably tones the language down slightly, but the spirit of the moment absolutely remains. As such, it's pretty dang satisfying after everything Krem has put Kara and Ruthye through (and Krypto). “I Know It’s Pretty Colorful, But That’s Just So Everyone Knows We’re Good” (Superman) Although it makes sense that so many of Supergirl's best lines would come from Supergirl, one of my favorites comes from one of the few scenes featuring Superman in a key flashback. In it, Clark is shown giving Kara a matching super suit to his own, while offering an explanation for its bright colors: "I know it's pretty colorful, but that's just so everyone knows we're good." Full of optimism, it's a classic Superman line. However, the line also goes deeper with a connection to Kara's past, seeing how her mother's last words to Kara before she died were instructions for her daughter to "Just be good." She doesn't have to be nice or perfect all the time, but at the end of the day, Alura wanted Kara to represent goodness. These are also the same final words Alura shares with Kara in the original Woman of Tomorrow series. As such, we get some very strong thematic resonance between the two moments when Kara finally puts on her suit in the movie's third act, as she's now seeing the suit for what it can truly represent for her, rather than viewing it as "useless" like she claimed it was to Ruthye earlier in the movie.
