₹111-crore medical infrastructure package planned for Coimbatore: Health Minister K.G. Arunraj

Minister for Health K.G. Arunraj and Minister for Backward Classes Welfare V. Sampath Kumar reviewing services at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Saturday. Minister for Health and Family Welfare K.G. Arunraj on Saturday (September 12) announced 15 medical infrastructure development projects and the procurement of 76 pieces of modern medical equipment, together worth ₹111 crore, for Coimbatore.He said Coimbatore would be one of the five zonal centres proposed under the Chief Minister’s Cancer Care Mission. A new nursing college would also be established at the ESI Hospital in Coimbatore, he said.Among the works proposed under the package are medical equipment worth ₹4.5 crore for the treatment of heart patients at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH), special care equipment worth ₹7.5 crore, and a ₹3.8-crore hostel for postgraduate students at the medical college.A new building would be constructed at the Government Hospital in Pollachi at a cost of ₹6 crore, while the Urban Primary Health Centres at Kavundampalayam and Singanallur would be redeveloped at a cost of ₹2 crore each.Mr. Arunraj said the government was also considering a request for a new outpatient ward building at the CMCH.On the shortage of doctors and nurses, he said the government had initiated steps to recruit 7,724 personnel through the district health societies across the State. A government order had been issued, and the recruitment would be carried out in a transparent manner, he said.The government was also planning to create 284 super-speciality posts, and steps would be taken to fill the posts, he said.Reviewing the dengue situation in Coimbatore, Mr. Arunraj said around 450 more dengue cases had been reported in the district till September 11 compared with the corresponding period last year. However, there had been no dengue-related deaths this year, he said.Dengue cases had declined over the past two weeks, he said, adding that prevention remained important. Dengue breeding control workers had been deployed to identify and eliminate potential breeding sources, particularly water-holding containers and waste.During the day, Mr. Arunraj inspected the facilities and reviewed the services at CMCH. He also visited a neighbourhood near Sitra in the city to inspect dengue prevention works.The review meeting was attended by Minister for Backward Classes Welfare V. Sampath Kumar, Sulur MLA Sukumar, Kavundampalayam MLA Kanimozhi Santhosh, District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar, Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja and Health Department officials.
