11 dead after spurious liquor consumption in Sagar; Congress seeks Rs 25 lakh aid

Madhya Pradesh Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar on Sunday visited hospitals in Sagar district and met people undergoing treatment after the hooch tragedy that has claimed 11 lives. He also met bereaved families and said the government must ensure the best treatment for those admitted to hospital.Singhar said the incident raised serious questions about the alleged illegal liquor trade and administrative negligence. In a post on X, he said, "The poisonous and illegal liquor in Sagar has claimed 11 lives, while more than 25 people are battling for their lives in hospitals. There is a possibility that the death toll may rise. People's bodies turning blue after consuming liquor and dying within a short time is extremely horrifying."During his visit, Singhar went to Sagar Medical College and Banda hospital, where he met patients and their family members and urged doctors to provide the best possible medical care. He also visited Bamura village in Banda tehsil, where five people died after allegedly consuming spurious liquor, and met the affected families.The Congress leader announced financial assistance of Rs 50,000 each to the families of those who died in the tragedy. He also demanded compensation of Rs 25 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased and a government job for one member of every affected family. He said the government must bear the full cost of treatment of those undergoing care. Singhar questioned how the illegal liquor trade could continue when the Home Department is under Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, and asked who was protecting the network. Apart from a probe into the incident, he sought strict action against officials and others allegedly shielding those involved.
