Sign in to your Collider account Video games are a great way to spend time, mainly because they have various lengths, meaning gamers can play as much or as little as they want, including short titles like What Remains of Edith Finch and Batman: Arkham Asylum. On the other hand, sometimes players want a game they can play forever if they want, and there are plenty of great games to spend hours on. From open-world fantasy RPGs to relaxing simulators and endless fighting games, there are many different genres of games that players can stay in forever. That is why this list will feature ten video games that players can play for 100 hours based on replayability, amount of content, design, gameplay, narrative, visuals, lack of tedium, fan opinion, and overall quality. 10 'Slay the Spire' (2017) Image via Mega Crit Deckbuilder games are a perfect genre to act as a time sink, letting players put hundreds of hours into them, including Slay the Spire. Gamers can choose one of four characters to climb the titular spire, using their cards to work together and defeat the enemies as they ascend. However, the first playthrough is just the tutorial, because the game has 20 more difficulty levels. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, Slay the Spire has 20 difficulty levels, meaning players have at least 20 playthroughs with new gameplay in each. However, they are almost guaranteed to die at least once, and each ascendance is procedurally generated, which adds new enemies and experiences each time. Slay the Spire is an addictive roguelike with something new every time gamers play. 9 'Fallout: New Vegas' (2010) Image via Bethesda Softworks RPGs are one of the best genres to spend 100 hours on, and the Fallout franchise is home to some of the best, such as Fallout: New Vegas. Players are a courier in the unforgiving desert wasteland, and when their wares are stolen, they set out on a quest for revenge that brings them into a territorial war for the Hoover Dam and New Vegas. Fallout: New Vegas, like the rest of the games in the franchise, boasts endless opportunities to have fun. A wasteland doesn't seem like a fun place to explore, but this game fills it with plenty of compelling areas, interesting landmarks, and eccentric characters. There are plenty of side quests, lore tidbits, and worldbuilding to experience everywhere, which is why it is a beloved 2000s video game. 8 'Destiny 2' (2017) Image via Bungie As of 2026, Destiny 2 has officially stopped supporting content, meaning Bungie won't be adding any more DLC or expansions. Players can create their character and set out on an operatic adventure throughout space after they are revived by the Light. With their newfound power and mission to protect the galaxy, they must face any threats that appear. With almost a decade of added content, Destiny 2 is overflowing with missions and things to do. The boss battles and raids are replayable, meaning gamers can go through them as much as possible to get the guns they want. Destiny 2 can be enjoyed with friends, family, on your own, or with strangers, and when tinkering with builds, there is even more to do. 7 'Baldur's Gate 3' (2023) Image via Larian Studios 2023 was one of the best years for video games in a long time, and this list will feature another title from the year, but for now, it will highlight the Game of the Year Winner, Baldur's Gate 3. Set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, players are infected by a Mind Flayer, and to avoid being turned into one, they must find a cure for the parasite while maneuvering through a war between mortals and gods. The only reason Baldur's Gate 3 isn't higher is that some fans would like some time to play by themselves without the social aspect. However, the sheer depth and passion put into this game is astounding, adding well over a hundred hours of gameplay. Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the most beloved video games ever because of the amount of agency gamers have to find any solution. 6 'Persona 5' (2016) Image via Atlus RPGs don't just fit into one category; they can be all sorts of things, including JRPGs and turn-based RPGs. This list will feature even more RPGs, but only one JRPG, Persona 5. Following a group of high school students who form a group of phantom thieves, they steal artifacts and other valuables from evil adults, stopping their villainous desires from harming the rest of the world. Persona 6 was recently announced, and fans can't wait to sink a hundred more hours into it, but for now, Persona 5 is still the best of the franchise. The main story alone takes around 100 hours to beat, so if players want to do some side quests or even 100% it, they will need to spend almost double the time. This means there is no shortage of flashy gameplay for fans to enjoy. 5 'The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom' (2023) Image via Nintendo of America The Legend of Zelda franchise houses some of the greatest games of all time, but their most recent entries have been longer than others, with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, in particular, being the longest. Just when Link and Zelda thought Hyrule was peaceful, Ganondorf was revived, sending the latter into the past and leaving the former to find her and defeat the Gerudo King. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild also has a lot to do, but Tears of the Kingdom adds two more worlds, more side quests, things to explore, and bosses to fight. Since it encourages exploration with missions, worldbuilding, Korok seeds, puzzles, items, or weapons, players can travel the world endlessly. Tears of the Kingdom is one of the best Zelda video games, and it is because of its scale and ambition that players can spend hundreds of hours in it. 4 'RimWorld' (2013) Image via Ludeon Studios Strategy takes time, meaning the genre has games that allow players to think and plan their movement, not to mention that they feature plenty of content. RimWorld is a colony simulator where players build up their faction after waking up from cryosleep. Their spaceship is destroyed, and they have strayed off course, meaning it is up to them to manage the colony and help it survive in the dead of space. RimWorld has a unique mechanic that uses AI storytelling to create fresh and innovative stories and motives as opposed to typical strategy narratives. This means that each playthrough has a unique narrative that players can direct and experience when playing. RimWorld is an incredible strategy game where managing the distinct aspects can take hundreds of analytical and engrossing hours. 3 'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate' (2018) Collider Exclusive · 8 Questions · 2 Minutes What Fantasy World Do You Belong To? Middle-earth · Grand Line · The Continent · Camp Half-Blood Pick your magic, your crew, where you want to wake up and who you would rather be fighting, and we will tell you which world you actually belong in. Four are open to you: an ancient kingdom living through its last good age, an endless sea full of pirates, a continent that pays people to kill monsters, and a summer camp where the Greek gods are extremely real and mostly a nuisance. 💍Middle-earth(Rings of Power) 👒Grand Line(One Piece) 🐺The Continent(The Witcher) 🔱Camp Half-Blood(Percy Jackson) FIND YOUR WORLD → 01 What kind of power do you want? Every one of these worlds runs on a completely different sort of magic. ASomething ancient and half forgotten that came down through my family. BSomething completely ridiculous that works in a fight and gets a laugh. CNo magic at all, just training, potions and a very sharp sword. DSomething I inherited from a parent I have barely met. NEXT QUESTION → 02 Who is travelling with you? Nobody gets through any of these stories entirely on their own. AA fellowship drawn from every corner of the world who barely trust each other. BA crew I picked up one at a time, all of whom would die for me. CTwo or three people I would never describe out loud as friends. DTwo mates from school who are exactly as out of their depth as I am. NEXT QUESTION → 03 Where do you want to wake up tomorrow? The best fantasy is usually just somewhere you would genuinely like to live. AA high city of white stone with the sea somewhere far below. BA ship under sail, with an island ahead that nobody has mapped. CA rented room over a tavern, in a town I am leaving in the morning. DA cabin at a summer camp with everybody else already awake outside. NEXT QUESTION → 04 How are you making a living out there? Even in fantasy somebody has to pay for the horse. AI am not, because somebody far older than me decided this was my duty. BTreasure, and I am not always careful about whose it used to be. CI take contracts, since people will pay well for what they will not touch. DI am fifteen and this is all technically a school trip. NEXT QUESTION → 05 There is something in the woods. What do you do about it? All four of these worlds keep something unpleasant out there in the dark. ASend word to somebody who has seen this before, then hold the line. BWalk straight in, because it is interesting and possibly edible. CAsk what it has been eating and what the village is willing to pay. DWork out which myth it escaped from, then improvise very badly. NEXT QUESTION → 06 Who is the villain of your story? The enemy tells you far more about a world than the hero ever does. AAn ancient evil that has been patient for several thousand years. BA government that has spent a long time calling itself the good guys. CA man who turns out to be far worse than anything I hunt for money. DA god, or possibly my own family, and quite likely both at once. NEXT QUESTION → 07 What do you actually believe in out there? Every world hands its heroes one rule and asks them to hold onto it. ASome things are worth defending even when the odds are hopeless. BNobody gets to tell me where I can go or what I am allowed to want. CPick the lesser evil, and never pretend afterwards that it was not evil. DMy friends come before anything a prophecy has to say about it. NEXT QUESTION → 08 A thousand years from now, how are you remembered? Eight questions in, this is the one that decides your world. AIn a song, in a language hardly anybody still speaks. BAs the one who got there first and proved the whole thing was possible. CBarely, and mostly wrongly, in ballads I would absolutely hate. DOn a plaque at a camp, read by kids about to do the same thing. REVEAL MY WORLD → The Map Is Drawn Your World Is…Four worlds and four completely different ideas of what a good life looks like. This is where you belong, what it would ask of you, and what you would get back in return. Middle-earthYou belong somewhere old enough that the mountains have names and somebody can still tell you who gave them. Middle-earth is for people who think the right thing is worth doing even when it will not be finished in their lifetime. This is the only world on the list where doing good is understood as a very long defeat, fought anyway, by people who will never see how it ends. You are drawn to grandeur, to white cities and deep forges and the sense that almost everything you touch is older than your entire family line. The Rings of Power is set in the last good age before it all goes wrong, which gives every quiet scene in it a slightly unbearable weight. You would take the hard road, and you would take it on foot. The Grand LineYou want the sea, a crew, and absolutely nobody telling you where you are allowed to go. The Grand Line is the world for people whose main ambition in life is finding out what is over there. One Piece has run for decades on one very simple engine, which is a group of people who each want something impossible and have decided to go and get it together. You collect people. Your ideal crew is a set of misfits who were each written off somewhere else before you turned up and offered them a better idea. The world is enormous and deliberately ridiculous, and the emotional gut punches land harder because of that rather than in spite of it. You would set sail knowing the map runs out, which is more or less the entire point of it. The ContinentYou would rather be feared and useful than liked and useless. The Continent is a world where the monsters are the straightforward part of the job and the people are where it all gets complicated. Witchers get paid to do what nobody else will and resented for existing at all, which is a trade most people would refuse and you would probably accept. You have no real illusions about which side is the good one, largely because on the Continent that question tends to have a disappointing answer. The best of these stories are not about the fighting. They are about somebody with a rigid code being repeatedly cornered into caring about people. You would take the coin, finish the job properly, and be out of town before the story got told wrong. Camp Half-BloodYou want the myths to be real and loose in the actual world, and you want to find out at about thirteen that you were never anywhere near as ordinary as everybody kept telling you. Percy Jackson takes the oldest stories we have and drops them into car parks and diners, which makes the gods considerably funnier and a great deal worse. You would be the kid every school gave up on, who turns out to have been built for something nobody thought to test for. The series is genuinely about friendship rather than destiny, and it says so out loud every time a prophecy tries to get in the way. Camp Half-Blood is the real fantasy here: a place where the thing that made you difficult everywhere else is the thing that makes you belong. ↻ RETAKE THE QUIZ The most replayable genre is up for debate, but ones such as RPGs and strategy are up there. However, the fighting genre is built on replayability, and one of the best is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This game lets players choose between a massive roster of Nintendo favorites and battle it out in familiar locations, whether that is against friends, family, the computer, or strangers. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is one of the best video games of the 2010s, and it earned that status because of its chaotic design and depth of content, which includes the biggest video game roster. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has a campaign, but the reason why gamers can sink hours into it is because of its replayable combat and competitive value. Image via Bethesda Softworks Bethesda already has one video game on this list with Fallout: New Vegas, but their most played and arguably the best title is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which perfected the franchise. After barely escaping an execution, players travel around the province on a quest to defeat Alduin, the World Eater, a dragon that is prophesied to destroy the planet. Also similar to Fallout: New Vegas, Skyrim is renowned because of its vast world that has so many side quests and mini-missions for fans to experience. The main story has lots of content for players, but they would be missing so much if that was all they did, because the side quests and random habitats/dungeons are half the fun. Plus, this amount of content adds an easy hundred hours to gameplay that fans can immerse themselves in. 1 'Minecraft' (2011) Image via Mojang Studios Some of the most entertaining games that players can put endless hours into are also the best-selling, and that is especially true with Minecraft. With no main goal, players can do whatever motivates them, whether that is fighting, mining, crafting, building, or exploring. Either building the realm of their dreams or defeating the Ender Dragon, the possibilities are endless. A game with a story can only be so long, and the open-endedness of Minecraft is exactly why the title has remained the biggest game for over a decade. When players are intrinsically motivated, they can pretty much do whatever they want for however long they want, and that is why fans play Minecraft for thousands of hours. There is no limit to what they can build or achieve, meaning 100 hours isn't nearly enough time to play Minecraft, one of the most beloved video games of all time.
