10 Strongest Lanterns in DC History

To many non-DC fans, Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart are the obvious answers to the question: “Who are the strongest ever Lanterns of all time?” But finding the accurate answer to this is more cosmology-spanning than simply finding the strongest Green Lanterns in the Corps. Ever since the Guardians of Oa built a power battery — the enigmatic Volthoom was actually the first to tap into the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum long before the Guardians — that single green light has splintered into an entire rainbow. With each new color, and each strange new host, the criteria for what makes someone a Lantern gets wider. So what actually makes a Lantern strong? It's rarely about the ring alone and more about a combination of several factors, chief of which are pre-ring strength and (of course) emotion. 10 Blue Lantern Barry Allen The events of Blackest Night made Hal Jordan a legend. But it also gave fans the option of seeing multiple characters like Wonder Woman and Lex Luthor don power rings to fight the Black Lantern menace. One such exciting example is Barry Allen’s Flash. Barry gets temporary Blue Lantern duties after he escapes becoming a black lantern by running into the future. Blue Lanterns needed the Flash's speed to help outrun the Black Lantern threat and spread hope across the universe quickly. Blue rings are actually more powerful than greens, but not entirely. That’s because while they are powered by hope (which trumps the willpower of the green ring), they can only reach their full potential when a green ring is nearby. Allied with his mastery over the speed force and time travel, battling Barry Allen’s Blue Lantern is a challenge many other Lanterns would hate to accept. If it's a Red Lantern standing in his way, Barry can disarm and nullify the opponent’s ring — Blue rings are the only ones capable of such a feat. 9 Gold Lantern Theoretically, Gold Lantern (Kala Lour) is the purest and most overpowered Lantern of all time. Newly introduced in 2019’s Superman Vol. 5 #14, he wields the Gold Lantern ring, designed by the Elders of Oa to surpass Green Lantern rings. The ring is fused from the entire emotional spectrum and enables its wearer to reconstruct molecules and travel faster than light through space. The only reason Kala isn’t higher on the Lantern rankings is the lack of feats to back up the comics’ claim, and the genuineness of the ring and its creators being called into question in Legion of Super-Heroes #12. 8 Sodam Yat Relying solely on on-paper power stats, Sodam Yat is among the most powerful full-time Lanterns in DC. That’s because he’s a Daxamite, a race similar in physiology to Kryptonians. Thus, he has all of Superman’s powers with the added power of the ring. In simple words: Sodam Yat is a Super Boy Green Lantern. However, his vulnerability is from lead rather than kryptonite. Thankfully, it has never been used in any major battle. When fulfilling his vow to the Green Lantern Corps, Sodam Yat can channel the Ion entity, destroy Ranx the Sentient City, and even reignite Daxam’s dying sun. During the Sinestro Corps War, he went toe-to-toe with Superboy-Prime across New York City. 7 Nekron Nekron is the king of necromancy; thus, the name: Lord of the Unliving. Legendary DC comics writer Geoff Johns terms him “the most powerful dark force in the DC Universe.” Compared to entities like The Great Darkness, Nekron is no match; but in the Lantern lore, he is among the most feared beings in existence. In Blackest Night, the Lord of the Unliving lived up to his name when he reanimated every person who had ever died across the universe and equipped them with black power rings. This new Black Lantern Corps was to hunt down and murder the living, most especially the former heroes and loved ones of the Green Lantern Corps. It took the concerted effort of a Life Entity-bonded Hal Jordan and the newly-created White Lanterns to defeat him. And to do so, they had to exploit Nekron’s one vulnerability: the link between him and Earth. Nekron needs a conduit to Earth to function as a force; thus, his weakness is his total dependence on an external link to the living universe, since he cannot exist there on his own power. In Blackest Night, the White Lantern Corps resurrect Black Hand and severed the tether that let Nekron reach the living plane. 6 John Stewart To sum up John Stewart’s strength amongst any Lantern, his power ring once told him that his willpower was stronger than it could process. It’s a willpower only matched (if ever) by fellow Lantern Hal Jordan. He has a resume to back up such a bold claim: becoming the first official male Star Sapphire in history, bonding with the Ultraviolet Light of the Invisible Spectrum on a cellular level. He also has the most strategic constructs among any lantern (arguably rivaled only by Hal Jordan); there’s a reason his colleagues call him the Master Builder. John’s courage is also as potent as his will. He opts to go about his Green Lantern duties without wearing a mask because, in his own words, he has nothing to hide. 5 Sinestro Every ranking of the strongest should and does include Sinestro for a reason. As a Yellow Lantern and head of the Sinestro Corps, fear bows before him; literally so, since he was once able to subdue the feat entity Parallax and exploit its powers. In his days as a Green Lantern, Sinestro was highly respected. He was regarded as the most intellectual in combat and was trusted enough to help write the training methods used on new recruits. His prowess is such that even as a Yellow Lantern, Hal Jordan acknowledged his unrivaled usefulness in battle. In Green Lantern vol, 5, #20, Hal sacrifices his ring to make Sinestro a Green Lantern again so the two could battle Volthoom. 4 Volthoom Volthoom is known as “The First Lantern” after he essentially discovered the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum and became the first custodian of the power ring upon the proto-Guardians creating the Great Heart for him. Volthoom is a serious contender for the title of the most powerful Lantern in existence. His suite of abilities is so vast (energy manipulation, space-time and reality manipulation, telepathy, precognition, teleportation, intangibility, regeneration) that the real question should be about what he can’t do. In Red Lanterns #17, the ferocious Red Lantern Atrocious learned the hard way when he was easily vanquished during the “Wrath of the First Lantern” crossover. The only time Volthoom was defeated was when a Black Lantern-powered Hal Jordan severed the Emotional Spectrum in Green Lantern #20. In other words, he can't die so long as light exists in the universe. 3 Hal Jordan Hal Jordan is the benchmark by which the Green Lantern Corps is held. He is blessed with the most abundant resource in the Lantern world: total dominion over a particular emotion. In this case, it’s willpower, although throughout the comics he’s shown mastery over other emotional spectrums as well. Hal’s willpower is so strong that the fear entity Parallax once possessed him and used him to nearly destroy the universe (in 1994’s Green Lantern vol. 3). He was used as a host precisely because his will could channel that much raw force. Alongside Jon Stewart and Kyle Rayner. Hal’s ring constructs are the stuff of legend. He once tried to rebuild and repopulate the entirety of Coast City when it was destroyed (in Green Lantern #48) and once created a giant mecha to battle Sinestro (in Green Lantern #6) 2 Kyle Rayner Among the great Lanterns, Kyle Rayner was perhaps the least-best qualified for the role. He was merely a struggling artist when Guardian Ganthet handed him the ring in a desperate attempt after Hal Jordan's fall into villainy. But the extent of his status as a Lantern post-call has never been in doubt since. He is one of only two Green Lanterns to bond with Ion; his bond with Ion is mutual as both lend each other strength and power). He the later became the White Lantern — the most powerful being in Lantern mythology — achieving so when he wielded the full emotional spectrum at once in Blackest Night #8. His background as an artist also makes Kyle’s constructs arguably the best among his peers. Some of his wildest include: a corporate executive’s head slurping the ocean through a straw, a hotel attendant conjured just to open a door, and a giant-sized pinball machine to trap his foe. 1 Yellow Lantern Superman Superman has become a Lantern at various points in his history. Injustice: Gods Among Us introduced DC fans to the strongest version of a power-ringed Superman. He also fought alongside Diana as a Yellow Lantern in Sinestro #19. At one point, he merged with Parallax to become the Yellow Lantern when he was a member of the Sinestro Corps, in 2016’s Superman #19. As a ringed Lantern, the Man of Steel’s powers stacked directly onto his native Kryptonian abilities rather than replacing them: full construct generation, energy projection. This combination made him uniquely dangerous compared to an ordinary Lantern.
