The famous Kaiju stars in many Japanese movies as well as several Western titles. Godzilla has fans worldwide, and numerous other creatures in the universe are well known even to casual fans. The franchise varies massively in tone, style, and budget, and audiences across the globe are eagerly awaiting the upcoming Godzilla Minus Zero. The upcoming movie will serve as a prequel to Godzilla Minus One, exploring events leading up to the 2023 movie. Godzilla Minus Zero is also filmed in IMAX, marking the first Japanese production to do so. There are already many reasons to get excited about the upcoming film, but the question remains: what can you watch in the meantime to fill the gap? Audiences know what to expect from a Godzilla movie. Few franchises show off mighty kaiju battles quite like them, but Godzilla films are much more than that. Many modern movies also demonstrate the human cost and how utterly helpless we would be in the face of such a powerful creature. 10 Love And Monsters (2020) Love and Monsters is tonally different from Godzilla as it's more of a survival adventure with an unlikely hero. Still, the movie makes the list for its impressive roster of bizarre alien lifeforms ranging from harmless herbivores to deadly flesh-eating beasts. That unlikely hero is Joel (Dylan O'Brien), and a cosmic event has caused monsters to appear on Earth. Their presence has forced survivors into small colonies, but Joel's love interest is in another settlement miles away. He decides to make the perilous journey to her alone, learning to deal with alien threats along the way despite his lack of survival skills. Love and Monsters has some brilliant creature designs and a relatable protagonist. Godzilla fans will enjoy the post-apocalyptic setting caused by the invasion, and the movie takes time to show off their ecosystem and how not every monster is a bloodthirsty predator. 9 Reign Of Fire (2002) Reign of Fire is a dark fantasy movie featuring an ancient creature that's lain dormant since prehistoric times. Workers accidentally stumble across a dormant dragon at a dig site beneath London. The mighty creature awakens and immediately attacks. To make matters worse, it starts reproducing soon after. Dragons became the dominant species on Earth, and Reign of Fire tells a post-apocalyptic story set years after they were first unleashed. The movie boasts an all-star cast, including Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale, in a surprisingly bleak story that pushes humanity to the brink. Humans are running out of places to hide from the dragons, and devise a plan to retaliate. The movie tells a dark story, but Godzilla fans will find plenty to enjoy in Reign of Fire, which features mythical creatures in a contemporary setting. 8 Jurassic World (2015) Even casual moviegoers know the Jurassic Park franchise, with many declaring the original one of the greatest movies of all time. However, Jurassic World is arguably a better match for Godzilla fans for its standout dinosaur battles. Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt as Owen Brady. He's an experienced animal specialist and velociraptor trainer working at the dinosaur park. A vicious hybrid carnivore escapes and threatens the lives of everyone in Jurassic World unless the authorities can stop it before it reaches the park's guests. Jurassic World offers a modern take on the Spielberg classic. It's tonally different, but the 2015 movie leans more heavily into dinosaur encounters, with some impressive spectacles and shock moments sure to please Godzilla fans. 7 War Of The Worlds (2005) War of the Worlds is a sci-fi classic starring Tom Cruise as Ray. Strange otherworldly invaders arrive, effortlessly crushing the military's response. The aliens arrive with huge, tripod-like walking machines that appear to be taking and harvesting humans. It's a grim premise, and Ray joins crowds of panicked townsfolk with his kids, scrambling for survival. The situation quickly becomes bleak and hopeless as the invaders seem to be winning and completely impervious to the army's attempt to stop them. War of the Worlds doesn't feature kaiju, though it still captures the widespread panic and chaos surrounding a supernatural foe. The tripods are scary because so much about them is shrouded in mystery, and Ray is relatable as a father forced to make snap decisions in a life-threatening situation. 6 Cloverfield (2008) Cloverfield is a bold monster movie that tells its story from a found-footage perspective. Michael Stahl-David stars as Rob Hawkins. He's preparing to leave New York for a job abroad, and his friends throw a party to say goodbye. However, their lives change forever when they hear commotion outside. Rob records the events with a handheld camera, and he sees the city ablaze. Something has attacked, but the partygoers have no idea what it is. Rob and his friends attempt a daring journey through the ruined city to reunite with a girl named Beth (Odette Annable) even though they don't fully understand what is happening or what the threat entails. The found footage perspective of Cloverfield puts audiences at the center of the action as chaos unfolds around the group. The camera is quite shaky at times, which some viewers may find uncomfortable, but it remains a tense Kaiju movie nonetheless. 5 Rampage (2018) Rampage is a more lighthearted action-adventure movie starring Dwayne Johnson as Davis. He's a primatologist and has a special bond with an albino gorilla named George. The gorilla is accidentally infected with an experimental pathogen that rapidly makes him grow and become more aggressive. George isn't the only creature affected by the pathogen. Ralph, a wolf, and Lizzie, a crocodile, are also infected, with similar effects. The trio of giant creatures goes on a rampage across the United States while Davis and Dr. Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris) try to find a way to reverse the effects. Rampage is full of intense monster action as the creatures lay waste to entire cities. Gamers will also find something special to enjoy as Rampage is based on an arcade classic of the same name. 4 Tremors (1990) Credit: MovieStillsDB The threat in Tremors is very different from Godzilla. Still, the movie makes the list for its classic creature feature story set in a secluded desert town. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward star as Valentine and Earl, two handymen looking to leave for a better life in the City. The duo encounters a landslide that blocks the road out of town. They soon realize that the blockage isn't man-made, and that a mysterious, horrifying creature under the ground may be responsible. The residents of Perfection Valley aren't equipped to deal with this bizarre threat, and must use unconventional means to survive. The creatures in Tremors aren't hulking kaiju, but the film still stands out as a grounded survival horror movie, but it's also lighthearted, with a charismatic cast. 3 The End Of Oak Street (2026) The End of Oak Street is the newest movie on this list starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor as Denise and Greg Platt. They experience a strange phenomenon during the night with their children, changing their lives forever. The Platts realize that dinosaurs have arrived in their once idyllic neighborhood. They are utterly unequipped to deal with this strange prehistoric threat and have no idea how or why the creatures arrived. The family also quickly learns they may be trapped among the dinosaurs with no way to escape. The End of Oak Street features an impressive lineup of dinosaurs quite different from what mainstream audiences will be used to. It's also surprisingly graphic at times and feels relatable because the Platts are just regular people rather than trained soldiers. 2 Troll Hunter (2010) Troll Hunter is a remarkable movie on this list because it's another title shot from a found-footage perspective. A trio of young filmmakers documents the alleged existence of trolls. They are heavily skeptical, though their opinion changes when they meet Hans (Otto Jespersen), a mysterious man who claims to hunt trolls and agrees to let them experience his strange profession. The filmmakers get more than they bargained for when Hans shows them a troll for the first time. These creatures may be elusive, but they are huge, towering behemoths, and each type has its own unique traits and appearance. The unique POV of Troll Hunter makes it feel very different from other movies on this list and quite different from a typical Kaiju story. Nevertheless, it shows off giant creatures in a unique light and convincingly grounded setting. 1 Pacific Rim (2013) Many Godzilla fans likely saw this recommendation coming, but Pacific Rim shares many similarities with the franchise. Giant extra-dimensional creatures have invaded Earth, though they didn't come from space. Instead, they come from beneath the waves with such might that they effortlessly cripple any military response to contain them. The monsters are called Kaiju in Pacific Rim, and humanity has one last-ditch response to beat them. Scientists have created the Jaeger program, part of a massive military project with huge bipedal mechs controlled by two pilots. These robots are humanity's last hope, but will they be enough to defeat the Kaiju threat once and for all? Pacific Rim is sure to delight audiences who cannot wait for Godzilla Minus Zero thanks to its jaw-dropping robot-on-giant-monster battles. Encounters between the Jaegers and Kaiju are a stylish spectacle, and the movie is full of unforgettable, over-the-top action set pieces.
