Without the Joker, Lex Luthor, or Megatron, Batman, Superman, and Optimus Prime wouldn’t have become the icons they are today. It should also be said that sometimes, for better or worse, the villains become more popular than the heroes. This is often because there’s a certain level of gravitas, relevance, or cool factor that their nemesis can’t achieve. Marvel Comics has an incredible assortment of villains that have helped propel their best to levels of stardom that no one could have dreamed. Rivalries like Wolverine and Sabretooth, and Daredevil and Bullseye helped both become some of comic books’ most popular heroes of all time. As great as both are, they’re not even in the top 10 most important villains in Marvel. 10 Mister Sinister Nathaniel Essex will always be looked at as one of the most evil villains Earth has ever produced. He went from being a random genius and racist to being augmented by Apocalypse. As time went on, Sinister removed the racist parts of his mind because it got in the way of his work as a mad scientist. Not shocking, but still a twisted reason to stop being racist. It also made him more dangerous. The true mark of a villain is the ability to lose a battle, but come out of things with a win. Mister Sinister is one of the best at that. It’s why the X-Men never truly defeat him. They only delay things until the next time he comes around. 9 The Skrulls The Skrulls don’t get the respect they deserve as being one of the greatest villains in comic book history. They don’t make this list because of their many battles with the Fantastic Four or turning Kl’rt into a super Skrull. They're here because they turned Earth on its head and made everyone mistrust each other, and were close to world domination (this happened in Secret Invasion). The invasion of Earth can be directly blamed on the Illuminati thinking they knew what was best for everyone. After capturing them and learning their secrets, they had a hand in every major event in comics. They also infiltrated Wakanda, the Avengers, and almost every government in the world. Not even Red Skull can boast that. 8 The Red Skull Johann Schmidt is everything that is wrong with humanity in and outside of comic books. He’s a Nazi who continues to talk and act like he and his followers are the superior race. It doesn’t matter that Captain America has defeated him and proven him wrong time and again. Red Skull continues to show that evil truly never dies. Johann is so bad that even Mephisto explicitly points out the flaws in his belief system. That’s right, the ruler of Hell, who has done some of the most atrocious things imaginable, thinks Red Skull and his Nazis are laughably foolish. 7 Sentinels Marvel's most important and impactful villains can't go without including the mutant-hunting robots. Initially, this was going to be a spot with Bolivar Trask. The problem comes when one realizes that Trask is just the creator. Since then, the Sentinels have become a symbol of hate for mutants and evolved into something far greater than Bolivar would have ever imagined. There are universes where the Sentinels are the oppressors of mutants and humans because they’ve evolved past their prime objective. Then there’s Nimrod, who became the leader of the artificial intelligence apocalypse. He was defeated during X-Men: The Fall of X, but something like him doesn’t stay down forever. They just return stronger and smarter. 6 Kingpin So far, everyone on this list has been enhanced in some way. Physically, Wilson Fisk is just a big, strong guy. Intellectually, he's not a genius with a doctorate, but moves with the smoothness and brilliance that has to be admired. Fisk came from nothing, built up a criminal empire, and became the Mayor of New York City. If it wasn’t for his obsession with superheroes (mainly Daredevil), he may have been good at his job. Sure, he would have been corrupt, but that fits the stereotype of a politician. Wilson Fisk has beaten Spider-Man and Daredevil, tricked the Avengers, and escaped death when he should have been warm with Mephisto in Hell. He will always overachieve because he consistently thinks highly of himself. As evil as he is, one has to admire that he understands his worth and isn't shy about flaunting it. 5 Thanos With or without the Infinity Stones, Thanos is terrifying. He’s a better engineer than Iron Man and Rocket Raccoon, tougher than most gods, and can fight the Hulk and Thor at the same time. He’s caused terror across the galaxy, and this name is whispered in fear even when he's planets away. Thanos killed half of existence in the universe as a tribute to Death (Marvel Comics' Infinity Gauntlet). That’s the kind of evil he is. He’s willing to go to the most extreme measures to get what he wants. Once upon a time, that was Death. Now that he’s over her, who knows what his next obsession will be? After his defeat at the hands of Knull, everyone should be worried that he may feel the need to prove himself as an even bigger threat. Everyone knows the Mad Titan will return, and he'll come back furious. 4 Loki Loki used to be a villain of the highest order. They spent years tormenting Thor because of their insecurities, thanks to their biological father (Laufey) and adopted father (Odin). It doesn’t help that Thor, Sif, and others made Loki feel lesser than when they were young. However, without Loki’s issues with Thor, the Avengers wouldn’t exist. The complicated thing with Loki is that what they do is in their nature. The God of Mischief, Stories, and Lies can’t help themselves. They will allow people to be hurt and killed because they think it’s funny, or it’s what they believe is the right thing to do. It’s what makes them complex, and why they seem to have their hands in everything. 3 J. Jonah Jameson Sure, Doctor Octopus, Eddie Brock, and Carnage have made Peter’s life miserable. Some villains have attempted to kill him and the people he loves. Some have succeeded. Despite all of that, none of them have affected the lives of both Spider-Man and Peter Parker like J. Jonah Jameson. Jonah didn’t take days off. The Daily Bugle needed pictures of Spider-Man, so his publication could tell its readers that the Wall Crawler was a menace, and Peter had to get those pictures. Imagine taking photos of yourself just so your boss could call you a murderer. That was Peter’s life every day. The Green Goblin did horrendous things, but at least it wasn’t personal. It was chemical. J. Jonah Jameson’s vendetta was, and he profited off of it. 2 Magneto Magneto was one of the first characters to redefine what a villain is. His origin may have started as one thing, but over time, he became a symbol of fighting back against oppression. He forced readers to think about whether or not Charles Xavier was going about his dream of mutant and human coexistence the right way. An even scarier thought was if the dream was achievable. Like any good character, Magneto evolved over time. He continued his fight against humanity, but he found new ways to attack or give mutants a chance at survival. He may be on the side of good now, but Magneto made plenty of world leaders and heroes nervous whenever his name was mentioned. 1 Doctor Doom Victor Von Doom went from being one of the main antagonists of The Fantastic Four to becoming the scourge of Earth. Spider-Man, the Avengers, X-Men, and countries worldwide know there’s always a possibility that he could take over. In fact, he did so, and unexpectedly, in One World Under Doom. Doom is a narcissist, but his feelings are justified.
