Holding a Bachelor's Degree in Religion and Culture from Wilfrid Laurier University, Karlis loves to examine the intersections of popular science-fiction and culture. His latest novel MASS. is available now on Amazon and examines a world where obesity has become a federal crime. Pacific Rim is one of the biggest and best science fiction movies of the 2010s, and these ten excellent films do a lot of the same things incredibly well. Building out an incredible Pacific Rim timeline, the first film told an exciting and original Kaiju story that saw humans fighting back against a monstrous threat using giant mechs. These kinds of stories tend to draw from Japanese stories and iconography that have been popular for decades. Series like the anime masterpiece Neon Genesis Evangelion have looked at the human toll of fighting enormous monsters with giant machines, and some of that series' themes were effectively explored in this explosive Hollywood blockbuster as well. Much of the nuance was explored here thanks to the work of director Guillermo del Toro. Del Toro's best movies have taken incredible science fiction concepts and have imbued them with deep, unrelenting humanity. This helped The Shape of Water to become among his most acclaimed works, winning the Academy Award for Best Picture. Pacific Rim, too, has a great deal under the surface. The film's story contends with trauma in some unexpected ways, and leans into the dramatic depth that concepts such as the neural link of the Drift are inherently linked to. In addition to this, however, Pacific Rim is also effective as an exciting and entertaining science fiction blockbuster. It is a fine line to walk, and while it may not have been done perfectly in Pacific Rim's sequel, many other great films also achieve this tonal balance. The Tomorrow War Prime Video's excellent 2021 science fiction action film The Tomorrow War is a thrilling adventure with a great cast and some fun ideas. The story weaves time travel concepts with a focus on military efforts, as contemporary soldiers are brought forward in time to fight against an alien invasion. The premise is clever, and the action is strong. Chris Pratt leads an excellent cast that also includes Sam Richardson and Yvonne Strahovski. Science fiction spins on war-based military premises tend to be especially gripping, and The Tomorrow War does just as well in Pacific Rim in taking its outsized ideas and making them feel real and grounded. Transformers Michael Bay's Transformers remains a streaming hit even all these years later because it is accessible, entertaining, and full of visual splendor. Taking the Hasbro toy line and the cartoons inspired by them, 2007's Transformers does a fantastic job tying stories of giant robots in with strong human characters. Pacific Rim has the human components at its core, despite the enormous action, and likely learned a few things about that balance from this film. With humor, heart, and great starring turns from both Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, the film remains a high watermark for blockbuster adaptations. Granted, the Transformers films tend to struggle as the franchise wears on. However, this first installment finds the perfect balance of robot action and deep-seated humanity. Godzilla Vs. Kong © Warner Bros. /Courtesy Everett Collection Another great example of taking a Kaiju premise and telling it through a uniquely Western lens, Godzilla vs. Kong successfully took the Monsterverse movies in a new, simpler direction. Godzilla vs. Kong is dumb, loud, simple, and fantastic. The film is exciting and does a great job chronicling the rivalry between the two iconic beasts before satisfyingly drawing them into a begrudging partnership against a shared enemy. This was the right move for the franchise. The film was a strong hit, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was even bigger, setting up for an additional sequel, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, slated for release in 2027. Rampage Rampage is a surprisingly strong video game movie with a fantastic lead performance by Dwayne Johnson. The film chronicles a series of creatures becoming mutated and turning into giant, Kaiju-like beasts. Johnson's Davis Okoye has a special bond with George, the mutant gorilla. This leads to the pair working together to stop the other monsters from destroying Chicago. The film injects perhaps a little too much seriousness into what is an inherently ridiculous premise, but it works most of the time. An entertaining film, and one of Dwayne Johnson's best movies of the 2010s, Rampage is still worth seeing. Terminator: Dark Fate The latest entry in the Terminator movie franchise, Terminator: Dark Fate was a fantastic return for Linda Hamilton. The film tells the story of the inevitability of an AI takeover, which seems more prescient with every passing day. The film is loaded with incredible and explosive action thanks to its director, Tim Miller, best known for helming Deadpool. It also dives into themes about integration with technology through the enhanced character of Grace, played by Mackenzie Davis. Like Pacific Rim, Dark Fate is heady science fiction that balances spectacle with thoughtful substance. It is a worthy entry into the long-running Terminator series. Cloverfield Image via MovieStillsDB A found-footage monster movie with an incredible viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield was incredibly special in 2008, and remains one of the best creature features of the 2000s. The entire Cloverfield franchise that followed slowly added to an interesting world. However, the premise of this first film, which sees a giant monster overwhelming Manhattan, almost feels like a prequel to Pacific Rim, set before humanity figured out how to fight back. A powerful film with great visuals and a grounded, human scope, Cloverfield shows a unique side to giant monsters that has rarely been seen in the genre. Independence Day Independence Day leans deeply into a sense of patriotism and an effective setting filled with 1990s Americana to tell an exciting story about an overwhelming alien threat. Technology plays a huge part in the story, and even contributes to the powerful climax. Like Pacific Rim, this film outlines the triumph of the human spirit over insurmountable odds. Rather than piloting Jaegers, however, the American military here takes on the alien monsters with fighter jets. A fantastic blockbuster with great performances by Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman, Independence Day is a July 4th treat that deserves to be watched every summer. Monster Hunter Paul W. S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich met working together on Resident Evil, and have been married since 2009. That film became an enormously successful movie franchise, so it makes sense that, in 2020, they would try their hands at adapting another video game property together. Monster Hunter, like Resident Evil, takes a lot of liberties with the source material. However, it also crafts some fantastic action and drama, showing a group of military soldiers taking on a series of Kaiju-like beasts. In addition to having some similar thematic and visual ideas, there is a shared star between Pacific Rim and Monster Hunter. Ron Perlman, who plays Hannibal Chau in the former, portrays the Admiral in this Capcom adaptation. Alita: Battle Angel Among the science fiction movies that most deserve a sequel, Alita: Battle Angel might be the most discussed. The film, produced by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez, is a powerful adaptation of the Battle Angel Alita comics, full of both style and substance. Alita is a complex character with a dark and shady past, the bulk of which she does not remember. The film provides a great examination of what it looks like when flesh and machine meld, which makes for an excellent contrast to how the Jaegers are piloted in Pacific Rim. The visuals are wonderful, the story is emotional, and the performances are excellent. With a cast that includes Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Mahershala Ali, Eiza Gonzalez, and many more, Alita: Battle Angel is one of the best science fiction films in recent years. Power Rangers (2017) Image via MovieStillsDB Movies like Power Rangers from 2017 are far too rare. The big-screen reboot of the popular Saban Entertainment property did a fantastic job in building an accessible and entertaining film from the franchise's legacy, feeling simultaneously new and familiar. The function and use of the Megazord in the film is its clearest point of comparison to Pacific Rim. In Power Rangers, each hero has their own individual Zord to pilot, but when these come together into a singular titan, the Rangers must work cooperatively to defeat the villain in an enormous, bombastic final action sequence. Unfortunately, Power Rangers never got the sequel that it deserved. However, like Pacific Rim, it does a fantastic job of telling a self-contained story that feels genuinely enormous.
