He has worked in tech, as a musician, and in journalism with a well-rounded knowledge base of pop-culture throughout the eras. He claims that he has memorized the entire Internet Movie Database, and to date no one has been able to refute this. Holding a Bachelor's Degree in Religion and Culture from Wilfrid Laurier University, Karlis loves to examine the intersections of popular science-fiction and culture. His latest novel MASS. is available now on Amazon and examines a world where obesity has become a federal crime. The Housemaid was one of 2025's most enjoyable hits, and while the world awaits a sequel, these are ten fantastic thrillers to watch. The twist ending of The Housemaid left audiences wanting more, and the box office success has allowed that to happen. A sequel with Sydney Sweeney, The Housemaid's Secret, is currently set for release in December 2027. These kinds of adult thrillers have always had an important place, with 90s and 2000s thrillers being especially great examples of the genre. As vehicles for great stars like Sweeney, these types of stories can do especially well; this allowed The Housemaid to earn more than $400 million at the worldwide box office, delivering one of Sweeney's biggest hits yet. Many of the strongest movies of this kind are pulled from the best thriller novels. The Housemaid was adapted from a novel by Freida McFadden, who has also written a number of other twisty, psychological thrillers. In that same vein, works by celebrated authors including Gillian Flynn and Paula Hawkins have also been made into similar films. Whether for their stories, their tones, or their casts, these ten films do the best job of telling thrilling stories with a fantastic psychological edge. While there will be more than a year before Sydney Sweeney's Millie comes back to the big screen alongside Brittany Snow in new Housemaid casting, there are many other great thrillers to watch. Deep Water Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas' shared sensual energy genuinely pops in this 2022 movie about a couple navigating some of the darker sides of their relationship. Fueled by jealousy and betrayal, the two make a fantastic core for this tense film. In the film, Melinda is consistently unfaithful to her husband, which drives him to some unexpected actions. With great tension, and some powerful chemistry between its leads, the film is an unusually titillating experience. Directed by Adrian Lyne, this adaptation of a Patricia Highsmith novel is tense, engaging, and above all, entertaining. With great sexual energy, and strong performances at its core, Dark Water remains a must-see. Blink Twice Zoë Kravitz's directorial debut Blink Twice is a smart thriller with an excellent cast. In the film, a group is invited to a private island owned by tech billionaire Slater King. Once there, things take some unexpectedly dark turns. The well-reviewed movie taps into ideas about power and how it can be wielded as a tool for abusing vulnerable women. With a great island setting and charismatic stars including Channing Tatum and Adria Arjona, the film remains a must-see. Dark, complex, and full of unexpected twists and turns, Blink Twice is a great first feature from Kravitz, who will hopefully direct more projects soon. Shutter Island One of the best twisty thrillers of the last few decades, Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island is a powerful story about memory, and it shares some thematic ideas with The Housemaid. Featuring a big twist at its core and some deep psychological examinations, this 2010 film really holds up. The excellent story hangs on a great performance by Leonardo DiCaprio at its center, but the supporting players also add a great deal. Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, and Michelle Williams deliver some of the best work of their respective careers. Like The Housemaid, Shutter Island is a film that gets even better upon a rewatch, and remains one of Martin Scorsese's best movies. Saltburn Saltburn is perhaps Emerald Fennell's most interesting film and, similar to The Housemaid, it looks at an outsider being welcomed into the home of a wealthy family who may not be quite what they seem. The film features an excellent cast, including some of today's most exciting young stars. Jacob Elordi, who shared the screen with Sweeney in Euphoria, is a standout in the film, alongside Barry Keoghan and Rosamund Pike. The house itself plays a large part as the story unfolds, revealing some interesting ruminations on class. Saltburn has problems, but it is also an unusually provocative film that certainly works in shocking its audience multiple times throughout. For this, it is well worth seeing. A Simple Favor Paul Feig has had a long and complex career, telling all kinds of different stories, but his initial entry into the realm of adult thrillers with A Simple Favor certainly has the most in common with his most recent film, The Housemaid. Led by a pair of beautiful women, A Simple Favor also tells a story that is full of twists and turns. It is built around the tension in a surprising relationship, including an unexpected love triangle. A Simple Favor is campy, silly, sexy, and thrilling all at once. It remains perhaps the strongest example of the kinds of thrillers that Feig is best able to put together. The Voyeurs A stylish thriller, the Amazon Original film The Voyeurs has a few things in common with The Housemaid. Most obviously, it also stars Sydney Sweeney, leading a cast that includes Justice Smith and Natasha Liu Bordizzo. More than this, though, The Voyeurs taps into a few similar ideas about domestic tension and viewing others through the lens of an outsider. It is a strong offering that feels just heightened enough to make its outsized story work. A campy, entertaining romp, The Voyeurs remains a great option for a genuinely entertaining late-night watch. Bone Lake Bone Lake is an exciting, erotic thriller that was one of 2024's most interesting releases. The film tells the story of two couples showing up to the same vacation home, which appears to have been double-booked in error. Of course, things grow more unsettling as details are slowly unveiled, revealing that nothing is as it has seemed. With mind games, complex relationships, and strong sensuality, Bone Lake is a fantastic experience. Featuring a beautiful home at the core of its story, Bone Lake is an especially engaging thriller that must be seen to be believed. The Girl On The Train Another excellent adaptation of a strong adult thriller novel, The Girl on the Train is a fantastic showpiece for its main stars, especially Emily Blunt and Haley Bennett. The film follows Rachel, a woman with a dark past and a handful of complicated secrets of her own. Like The Housemaid, The Girl on the Train examines what appear to be perfect relationships from the outside, slowly adding the necessary context to understand the greater complexities tied to them. The film provides some surprising twists as Rachel's story becomes intertwined with a murder, and yields a thrilling experience that keeps audiences gripped until the credits roll. Gone Girl Image via MovieStillsDB One of David Fincher's best movies, Gone Girl is a thrilling adaptation of Gillian Flynn's novel that is packed full of twists and turns, incredible tension, and great performances. Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike lead the cast as a couple whose relationship is not as perfect as it seems. When Amy disappears under mysterious circumstances, the skeletons in their attic finally begin to come out. Her husband, Nick, becomes a core suspect in the investigation as details surrounding his infidelities and other issues come to light. A fantastic story packed with complicated characters, Gone Girl is perhaps even better than the book that it adapts. With a great tone and several surprising twists, it remains among the best thrillers ever made. The Invisible Man (2020) The Invisible Man is a fantastic movie that taps into many of the same dark themes concerning control and domestic abuse as The Housemaid, contributing to a story that ultimately becomes about female empowerment. The film stars Elisabeth Moss and Oliver Jackson-Cohen. An effective thriller, with excellent scenes of tension and excitement alike, The Invisible Man might be the best adaptation of this classic story that has ever been told. Injected with modern themes and stunning direction by Leigh Whannell, it is among the best horror movies in recent years. While it might be some time before The Housemaid returns to the big screen, there are many other movies like it that cannot be missed. The Invisible Man might be the best of them all.
