A retailer may have preemptively spoiled the release date announcement, though. 007 First Light's listing on Amazon Japan has a release date of September 16, 2026, for its Nintendo Switch 2 version. This would be less than four months after the game's initial release date in May—a relatively quick turnaround considering how long the Switch console family has had to wait for other belated ports. It's possible that this is merely a placeholder date, as retailers are known to do, but a placeholder right in the middle of the month seems odd. It also seems strange, at first, that the Switch 2 version would release on a Wednesday—an uncommon day for video games to launch—but 007 First Light's initial release was on a Wednesday as well. It's also notable that that Amazon listing appears to confirm that 007 First Light's physical Switch 2 copies will come as a Game-Key Card. These have been a contentious aspect of the Switch 2's lifespan so far, with most third-party releases using this new form factor. Game-Key Cards are essentially a physical download license; no game files are present on a Game-Key Card cartridge. Like many other Switch and Switch 2 ports, 007 First Light was delayed on the platform because of hardware constraints, with extra time required for additional optimization. Gameplay on the Switch 2 has not yet been shown, and 007 First Light may benefit from the console's DLSS support, but reports of the game performing decently on the Steam Deck is a good sign ahead of the port. 007 First Light is a new take on the iconic MI6 agent, coming 14 years after the franchise's last video game outing, the widely panned 007 Legends. The new game puts IO Interactive's Hitman experience to good use, morphing that series' puzzle-box levels into more linear, yet still heavily interactive levels that provide a satisfying combination of espionage and action. It's a technically impressive game, with many levels bursting at the seams with NPCs, and certain set pieces containing a wide range of visual effects. It's the kind of game that likely never would have made it onto the original Switch, but the Switch 2 has so far seen an impressive lineup of cutting-edge ports, like Cyberpunk 2077 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth. 007 First Light was officially scheduled to land on the Switch 2 before the end of the year, and now a leaked release date may see it arrive on September 16.
